When it comes to the history of that island, as a Haitian American I always wonder what could ve been. If my Taino ancestors weren t wiped out, I d Toussaint hadn t been taken, if Boyer wasn t a dictator and instead tried to actually United the island, if the Americans hadn t treated both places like a bank check, if the people had a chance to grow and not be further re enslaved, of the 2 dictators Papa doc and Trujillo had not ruined those nations through their iron fisted rule, if Las Mairposas had lived, so many possibilities it s heartbreaking

I think the title is a bit misleading to people who don't really know the history about the island. It's more accurate to have it be Why did the island of Hispanionla split? Haiti and DR were never one country out of choice, since before the French there was no Haiti, only the land that would later become Haiti because of France's colony there. After the French left and DR gained independence from Spain, the Haitians invaded and occupied DR, not a friendly union.

You don t see such intense nation building events in Latin America/Caribbean other than in the bigger countries like Mexico and Colombia. It explains why nationalism penetrates both nations with more ferver than foreigners would expect. However it s not as crazy now as it was a few decades ago, with, for example, intermarriage between Dominicans and Haitian immigrants in the DR becoming more common.

The Polish that were allowed to remain were initially sent there by Napoleon to quell the revolt. After arriving, some 150 Polish soldiers (out of the 6000 poles sent) defected to the rebels. After winning the revolt, the Poles were granted classification as Noir (black, which constituted the new ruling class, and the Haitian constitution granted them full Haitian citizenship.

That's highly misleading about US involvement this was gunboat diplomacy and the US never had administrative control over any of the island. No more than a single company of marines was involved at any given time and there were more problems than just debt involved. At one point the marines left Haiti but the boat was ordered turned around due to a coup threat.

Except for the Polish, that is, they were cool.
Napoleon sent Polish forces to aid the French troops suppressing the rebellion. A number of the Poles sympathized with the rebels and either switched sides or refused to follow orders or did not execute prisoners. These actions were recognized and the Poles were spared.

Isn't there a rather basic difference in that the main language in the DR is Spanish, while in Haiti it is French (or a French-based creole? The French colonies were always very keen on getting their inhabitants to speak French, so the part of the island occupied by France was also Frenchified.

As a Dominican, I think this video is excellent. You managed to do a great job of telling the full picture considering the length of this video. Just one thing: I can kind of understand the meaning behind the title, but some dominicans are not going to like that phrasing lmao

Those indemnities to France were over property French citizens lost by Haitian independence. property as in Haitian citizens. Yes, the Haitian government had to pay French slave owners for lost property and income and only finished repaying that debt in 1947

As a dominican, is great to see you covering a bit of the history of our small country, although you missed the second NorthAmerican intervention on 1965 to overthrow a potentially comunist government which lasted a year. Great video nonetheless.

Tldw: because France decided to take 1/3 of Spanish land thus dividing it and when the descendants of the French colony tried to take the whole island the descendants of the Spanish revolted successfully creating the Dominican Republic

The US is surprisingly incompetent in expanding their power in the american continent despite being the only major power and creating an entire doctrine that can be summed up with Europeans can't expand here, only the US can.
