Denmark didn't get involved in World War One. Despite this, after Germany's defeat, Denmark was given northern Schleswig. So why? Why did a nation that did nothing get free land from a defeated foe? Patreon

The title on the thumbnail is misleading. We did not get land for free. It was our land to begin with. And we owned more than we got back. But because we are such nice people we had votes and the part that voted to stay with Germany got to stay with Germany. And Southern Jutland got to join back with us. We just got back what was ours. Its like if someone stole your car and the police finds it and gives it back to you, you did not get a free car. You just got your car back.

Fun fact, in the german state of Schleswig Holstein, where theres is still a danish minority, the danish people have their own party, the South Schleswig electors union, which is supposed to represent them. It's the only party who is allowed to siege in the regional parliament even if they don't get 5% of the votes ( if the other parties get less than 5% of the votes they aren't allowed into parliament. This rule is to make sure that the danish minority is always represented.

Politics are crazy stuff. Belgium wanted dutch soil, the dutch part of Flanders: Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Because we stayed neutral in WW1. We helped a lot of refugees here but nonetheless they wanted compensation. Anyway: the inhabitants protested and the allies refused in the end.
After WW2, the dutch demanded great chunks of Germany as compensation. Allies: get real dutch lads, not going to happen. So you see, crazy ideas are contagious.

Denmark did the right thing they took the land where there was actually danish people living there, why do I say this is good because we can look into WW2 let start with Czechoslovak the Sudetenland was occupied by 3. 5 million Germans, had Denmark had Germans incorporated into there land the nazi would use that as an Excuse to invade them, which did happen including Norway but that was a whole different strategy of why they invaded

Alpha entente: gaining land after winning the war
Beta bulgaria: gaining land despite losing the war
Sigma Denmark: gaining land without taking part in the war:
Chad czechoslovakia: losing carpathian ruthenia despite being pressured into German annexation
Poland? : winning the war but becoming a puppet state of ussr, losing land in the east but also gaining land in the west becoming a Central European country

Its super surprising that Denmark not only refused the extra free land, but also had to get support from USA to help tell England ( who used to have them as colonies) and France ( who helped fight off the England during USAs war of independence) to back off, so that Denmark didnt have to take land. Land that the Denmark before 1864 wouldve gladly taken and suppressed.

One interesting sidenote, until today there is a significant danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein and vice versa and they got granted some very specific rigths. For example, there is a party only representing the Danish minority and the have a guaranteed amount of seasts in the regional parliament of Schleswig-Holstein.

In Germany we have a 5% hurdle, which any party must take (they must atleast get 5% of all valid votes) to get into any comunal, state or federal parliament. Except for the Danish minority party in Schleswig-Holstein. They get into the state parliament even when they get less than 5% of all valid votes.

We use to belong down to Hamburg. It was stolen from us less than 200 years ago. Our tribes went down to Hamburg and Saxons stayed south and somewhat North to river Elbe belong the Anglii tribes. Look at Ancient Germanic tribes and see my point.

So, obviously, WWII came out of nowhere. especially regarding the independence of poland, which was, obviously, reestablished afer 1945. Entente cordiale or when the bad guys actually are winning thanks to US intervention: -/

Just scratching my head why the sign at the beginning of the video says Zuid Nederland and Nederland. This is Dutch and it means the south of the Netherlands and the Netherlands. Otherwise, the video is informative.

Denmark: Yeah we only want Northern Schlesswig
France and Britain (hoping they would ask for all of Pomerania): Uhhhh how about all the lands north of the Kiel canal?
Denmark: Uhhhhh how about no?

reply

Cause Allies wanted to start another world war. That's the reality. you cannot take away their responsibility. WW2 had no other option but to break out, a simple map after WW1 is enough to proof that.
reply

There is more to that referendum. That was quite critical. Everone could vote, they just had to have a relative in Holstein. So the Germans just importet more Germans to Holstein

Leaving them with only one option:
Discussion.
with each other.
about how they were going to crush Denmark in a war.
hahahaha hilarious and polite way to invoque WAR

reply

It is funny. WW2 started because of how unfair Germany was treated after WW1. And then they treated them in the exact same way. Denmark is the only one who understood.
reply

If another nation offers you free land, ALWAYS question their motivations for doing so, because 9 times out of 10 they are doing so for their benefit, not yours.
reply

2: 40 Parliament will begin a debate today as to whether any Germans still living in the new Danish territories will be allowed to stay or simply eaten instead.
reply

Kudos for Denmark for not breaking under pressure being fair and looking at the ethnic majorities first before deciding what they want to take.
reply

It is always funny that many people see the Entente as the good guys in WW1 while actually everybody was a dck and nobody actually had good intention.
