The Warsaw Treaty Organisation as they called themselves ( you only make a pact with the devil after all ) are structured to supply troops and infrastructure for them within the Soviet Forces in Europe, the Governments of those Nations also did their level best to stay out of the War down South. they would watch the Reactionary Capitalists while the Soviet Union did its Internationalist duties for a fraternal socialist Nation. Some WTO Government Organs did some tasks for the Soviets, like the DDR sent some Police Advisers, I have read.

Warsaw Pact is back causin' a mass destruction
Guess who's here? The bad boys of wrestling
Just some competition in the war destination
Not and no mercy see the ring is like the street
If you don't know you better find out the Warsaw Pact
Here to prove a point number one best believe
That you don't wanna mess with them
I be on a roll and I'm come in the ring
And you're never walking out again
Don't turn your back on the Warsaw Pact
You might wind up in a body bag

Hello, historian of the Afghan wars here. A great video but I d say the soviets were very much concerned about that the international opinion of their invasion was. They leaned heavily on the Afghan governments request for aid as their justification. They were just willing to risk international outrage because the thought the conflict would be over relatively quickly. The politburo and foreign ministry were very active after the invasion trying to mitigate the damage.

The USSR also full well knew that the problem in Afghanistan was promoted and maintained by the USA and feared that they were trying to get them to shift troops, an important distinction. By the time of Thatcher's and Reagan's insane Able Archer 83 the USSR was terrified of the West.
(They have never tried to explain why they thought Able Archer 83 might be a good idea even though it almost resulted in wiping out humanity)

I read somewhere that the Warsaw Pact was abit different from Nato. Basically the USSR had several bilateral defence treaties with eastern european countries and packaged them into one alliance. Except unlike Nato which is the social media group where all members were admins, warsaw pact had one admin who decided how each group member was treated. Just what i read.

Something i was wondering today: it makes sense that Christians, Muslims, and Jews all get their own quarter of Jerusalem, but why did the Armenians get a whole quarter, especially since they are majority Christian, and yes, they're a different flavor of Christian than most, but why didn't the other flavors get their own slice of Jerusalem as well?

Be reasonable as acc. to Leonid Brezhnev requesting men for Afghanistan from the WP ( 2: 24): We can literally drown this country in dudes. Just chaps in uniform all over the place. They literally won t stand a chance and odds are they ll run out of ammo before we run out of your kids.
The ironies of History. Which can clearly Matter.

The Warsaw Pact had no obligation to help the Soviets in Afghanistan, as it was a defensive alliance and thus was only obligated to step in if Warsaw Pact territory was attacked, not to help in offensive military operations.
It s the same principle for why NATO had no obligation to help the US during its invasion of Iraq.

As if the soviets knew how to fight an insurgency
Taking tanks and ifvs that didn't have the elevation to shoot at the locals in the mountains. When hit and run tactics where employed and Afghans hid in their villages the Soviets did the most typical thing. Bombing and shelling the entire village.

Under the Warsaw Treaty, the armed forces of the non-Soviet member states were legally subordinate to a Deputy Defence Minister of the Soviet Union. Article 5 of the Treaty provided for the command system and Article 4 limited it to matters relating to attacks in Europe.

Very interesting thanks! ( although I did have to laugh at a reason. concern in the USSR that their reputation as a military power had diminished. ) Talk about not learning the lessons of history & creating a self-fulfilling prophecy

These are always great videos. Now he needs to do videos on the following subjects:
1. Why did the revolution of 1848 fail in Germany and Spain?
2. Why do people drive on different sides of the road in different countries?

Why didn t the USSR annex them after WW2 like it did to the Baltics. As far fetched as the scenario sounds, it was the end goal of the USSR to establish global communism and unite all people under one communist regime.
