A lot of these bargaining points are initial stances and are expected to be bargained down.
Literally even if they did agree to everything the great powers leaders can't just accept them when they're not actually at the bitter end, their own people will string them up - as often did happen - if they don't make some show of resistance and bargain down.
Unfortunately a lot of what was initially wanted from negotiations isn't really known, there often aren't set and firm goals in a totality. This is because great power negotiations depends on countless factors and you can get tied down by your firm requirements. Worse, hindsight has a way of skewing what politicians thought they could get and as they're politicians they don't feel a great impetus to be totally truthful in memoirs, reports and commissions of enquiry. This trying to work out what a person is actually saying is what makes history so hard.

Austria: Actually, we don't want peace. Also, we're telling everyone you don't want peace.
France: Oh, so it's like that, huh HEY GERMANY, THIS SLIMY WIENERSCHNITZEL WAS TRYING TO BETRAY YOU. WE HAVE THE RECEIPTS AND EVERYTHING!
Austria: Wait, no! What are you doing!
France: Chaining your legs to the sinking ship. Say 'Auf wiedersehen' to your Habsburgers!

Austria-Hungary was always going to fall apart, the increasing nationalism ensured that a multi ethnic state like Austria-Hungary was going to disintegrate once it destabilizes because of the food shortages. Hungary was selling food to Germany instead of Austria because Germany has the money and Hungary resented being dragged into a war it didn't want and was getting punished for.

Interestingly, Austria-Hungary's ethnic strife for most of the Great War was limited pretty much to muttering and moaning.
If you want an example of real ethnic strife against an imperial occupation, I refer you to 1916's bloody Easter Uprising in which King George's Irish subjects took up arms against their British overlords.

At the end of the war, the Austrians tried to do the same seperate and secret peace treaty like here, but the by this point the Entente were absolutely going to win so they they just threw it back in their face
Austria continues her proud tradition of having abysmal foreign policy. Let's only negotiate when we have no leverage

From the perspective of the smaller successor states of Central Europe, WWI was like the plot of A Fistful of Dollars - a hella unlikely best case dream scenario. The three autocracies on opposing sides wore each other out for them to at last gain their freedom and sovereignty. Only for WWII to take it all away again until 1989.

If austria had tried to actually implement a separate peace, it would have been swiftly invaded by germany and had a more amenable government installed. The only way to prevent this wohld have been if allied armies were ready to occupy the country to prevent Germany from doing so, at which point why bother with the treaty.

Austria-Hungary was basically a predominantly Slavic nation ruled by a German-Austrian (and to a lesser extent Hungarian) elite. It never truly federalized, granted universal suffrage to its citizens, nor had a real constitutional monarchy. Under the pressures of liberalism first and war later, it crumbled apart.

Austria did so bad in this war, not only on the diplomatic front, but also internally and militarily. In hindsight you have to surmise this country was run by total idiots. The war even started because of Austrian idiocy. If it had not caused so many casualties you could almost laugh at it.

0: 24 Kaiserschmarrn or Kaiserschmarren is a lightly sweetened pancake that takes its name from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I, who was fond of this fluffy shredded pancake. It is served as a dessert or as a light lunch alongside apple sauce and contains raisins or dried cranberries.

After _its_ shelled to rubble, that is.
Its Has History Matters made a mistake This is one for the history books!
It might of course also be a ploy to defame the Vienna Times and therefore Austria. We blame the French.

In germany's defense, Austria started the war and their army performed so poorly that the Germans had been propping them up for three years. Hearing that the Austrians were now trying to sell them out must have been a real pisser.

Interesting to see that in case of Austrian victory they would have taken Lombardy and Venetia. which makes a lot of sense asvit used to be one of the richest provinces of the Empire until 1859.

This was the warmonger influence of Count Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf who should be blamed for causing WWI, not the Kaiser. It was von Hotzendorf who pushed Austria into attacking in the first place.

I cannot imagine a world where Austria Hungary somehow survived the war and chaos of the 20th century. Like Thano’s there’s an alternate universe where A. H. not only won but thrive.

Treaty of Spa: odd that they would agree to something that the Germans would only otherwise get by occupying their whole country. I think the Germans were too busy to worry about that.

As someone with ethical obligations to keep my mouth shut I’m somewhat disgust with the Triple Entente tattling on Austria-Hungary. To quote a brain-dead politician come on, man!

0: 22 every winning plan needs kaisarschmarrn as the end goal. I’d be willing to wager if they had included it in their actual war goals things would have gone down differently

Why tf did Germany and AH have a meeting and a treaty all the way over in occupied Belgium (Spa) surely they could’ve found a town somewhere between the two on one of their own soils

Very interesting, makes you wonder what would have happened if he succeeded. Probably a nightmare for Croatia, being divided between Italy, Austria-Hungary and Habsburg Serbia.
