People commenting a lots of nonsense. They mix WW2 with colonialism. Thailand lost a lots of land during colonialism time but we are glad now because looking around what happen to countries around Thailand after European leave. European takes what they need and destroy a country and leave the rest for the people of the land to deal with. Just look at Africa.

We Siamese people are highly nationalistic. But it does not prevent you from receiving culture from other places. I'm Thai, living in Canada.
We had smart kings who could deal with any problems to keep us peaceful. Lots of history will show that some situations Thailand did not have to fight and drain blood in our country.
No matter what now a day is, we have this country because of the king families. Proud to be Thai!

So basically Thailand was playing cheerleader for the British and French colonial empires to avoid colonization. Similarly to Japan post-WW2 except that Japan WAS the colonial empire for Asia most of the 1800-s-1900-s.

The truth is that it was never colonized by Europeans, the land of Southern Thailand was controlled for a very long time by Srivijaya from Indonesia and Funan and Khmer from Cambodia. -
