Why does France still have a South American Territory? - History of French Guiana There is one thing about French Guiana I dont think to be proud of: their economy is basically the Ireland-style economy, which mean ridiculously high GDP, but low standard of living. Being from Ireland myself, I have witnessed exodus of many Irish away from my country despite the fact Ireland is very prosperous. One reason is, despite Ireland has one of the best GDP/per capita and is home to many multinational companies, it fails to generate improvement of living standard because everything is skyrocketed and the government has been unable to address these matters.
French Guiana, despite boasting the highest GDP/per capita in South America, has one of the worst living standard in the Americas, rivalling only Bolivia, Paraguay and maybe some Central American states despite superior GDP. Hell why so many former French colonies hate France and, given Frances failure to improve French Guiana, you should expect Frances fragility in the future. Corsica, for example, had recently witnessed a rebellion over accusation that France exploited the territory. Who knows?\r\n

France is called differently Galia and they invented a port to all world and they called Portogalia with different accents of Latin language and from there from they did many things in different countries and places of the world blaming Portugal. But the reality is they-re taking all the profits. how possible country like Portugal had all this power and colonialism without the French behind I don-t think so. So Portugal = France just business and politics.

We live in France and for years have used the Royal British Legion to import our poppies for the November end of WW1 commemoration event. Last year however their internet site refused to list France as a country I could get a delivery made to. On querying this I was told that since Brexit no deliveries would be made to the EU. Funny how it was still possible for me to export poppies to French Guiana which is still part of the EU.

It-s not the americas, it-s America the continent. We here in America know that there are two areas foreigners have remained on our lands- Guyana and the US. Guyana cos their roots are French and the US whose roots are British. Our roots are actually from here in America as we have indigenous roots. It is no wonder why in all of America, the two areas who are sort of outcasts are Guyana and up in the northern region the US and Canada.

The video doesn't sufficiently explain what an -overseas department of France- is. It's a part of France just like any other region of European (-Metropolitan-) France except that it's in South America. It's not officially a territory, a colony, or a possession but according to the law of France, is as much a part of the country as Paris.

If with the same history this ''colony'' was American or British and the creator of this video a french guy, the content of this video will have been 90% about Black slaves in that Guyana but especially about the horrible penal history of that guyana. Lol. Objectivity (or is it objectiveness) is not part of french DNA.

Spanish/Portuguese colonization/decimation/genocide throughout South America, Central America, Mexico and much of the US is a subject not taught in US schools, or discussed by liberals, when they're describing hispanics as a -minority- and calling them a -oppressed- victim group. Reality is quite the opposite.

The video shows us a map of Africa with the comment -from the sixteenth century the French manage to seize territories in Africa- It is false the first commercial counters in Africa date from the mid-eighteenth century. And colonization in Africa in the mid-nineteenth century.
reply

Land free to be taken? Really? You mean stealing, no matter the cost to the local population. Many massacres took place around the world because it was -free to take. - Same mentality that considered people from Africa -free to take. -
reply

F the French and any colonizers that came and did horrific things to my people. Those places should have banned there customs and ways. Unfortunately they lost their heritage and native tongue due to those who came and destroyed us

I'd say a good solution would be to allow lots of creole-speaking Haitians to migrate there (Haiti has far too many people, where the land, climate, & farm potential is familiar to them, then make it independent.
reply

What a nice way to say 'colony'. Territory, really? - There are those who label it differently, adding some 'complicated' science & research BS. The (im)moral driving forces remain the same. As do the objectives. -

Can you maybe do a video about why Britain still owns Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Saint Helena, the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda? (I forgot the names of the other territories)
reply

I once ordered a set of beetle specimens from Entimo-source in French Guiana of the worlds largest type,
Titanus giganteus 15-16 centimeters. Thank you for those, I donated to a museum collection.

reply

I forget the exact detail, but counting various states and territories, maritime boundaries, etc france controls the most time zones and geography in the world.
Hmm, that's not insidious at all.

reply

Great to see this video was made. I didn't even know as a person who is interested very much in geography that france shares a long border with Brazil until recently.

French Guiana: No
France: oh shuut. we can't get rid of that

reply

French Guiana have full French citizenship, they vote in French elections, so it's not a real colony today. They even use the Euro as currency.
reply

That's curious. Noting about the large black population of french guyana, how they arrived there and what they were used for all those centuries.

-- -A tough ride for Texans still- totally ignoring it's one of (if not THE) most powerful states in the most powerful nation on Earth -

You called it guinea several times at the end of the video- just a heads up. It-s Guiane! Pronounced like guyana without the a at the end

Wasn-t Louisiana sold by Napoleon to Jefferson in the early 1800s? This piece says it was given up in the Treaty of Paris in 1763?
reply

South America was a very far away French could hide when they FREQUENTLY SURRENDER, as they have for the last few centuries.
reply

Why doesn't France just sell it to Brazil? It makes no sense for France to have a territory down here in the 21st century
reply

Because France can have territory. Stop making it seem like France is still a colonial power. They claimed that so let it be.
reply

Anglophone world seems fully interested in dismantling France. What can't you understand by referendum voted by people?
reply

Why does France still have a South American Territory?
Why we use English as International language?

reply

Sucks to be french. They always got whopped. Even during the world wars, they got whooped pretty bad. -
