Simply put, the Confederacy lost because:
(1) The North was the industrial part of the of the pre-war US while the South was the agrarian (farmers) part of pre-war US (ie the North made stuff and the South made money growing cotton, tobacco and sugarcane. The South grew more cotton than the rest of the world combined.
(2) The North blockaded the South so they were unable to sell their cash crops to the rest of the world and prevented importation of the industrial supplies they needed such as weapons and machine parts.
(3) The Mississippi River was the main interstate highway transportation system used by the South and it divided the Southern states in half. The North gained control of river traffic which prevented roughly 1/2 of the South from supporting the other 1/2 of the South.
Of course, it wasn’t quite that simple.

Aren't scorched earth type policies considered war crimes Just saying, The North seem to use that frequently; almost like they mean't to punish the local polulace en masse. This is typified by Sherman's March to the Sea whereby he took non-comabatants as prisoner in order to break up communities and families when he took on the habit of deporting residents to random northern destinations. I have never heard of such institutionalized hate and wonton disregard for fellow citizens. Just a thought that nags at me whenever I watch a civil war video. Good production quality. Few weeks ago i started to read john keegan american civil war. Today I already finished the chapter is called Breaking into the South. One quote from this chapter:

War is war, not a race for popularity. If they want peace, they and their kindred must cease to fight.
They cannot describe war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty itself, and it is impossible to ennoble it, and those who brought war into our country deserve all the scorn and curses that the people can heap upon them.

General Grant kept his field HQ co-located with Meade's HQ so he could coordinate with various Union Forces operating in Virginia. Same as he had acted in West for the last year he served in the West with up to five separate Union Armies acting as one force, before Sherman took charge of these Armies with Grant appointment as the Lt. General and General in Command of all Union Armies.

Fun fact. Modern socialist revisionists would have you believe the war was only about slavery. That’s part of the modern day anti American hero and culture movement. The truth is the American civil war was about Independence, limited government, and mainly patriotism. The Union had 8 slave states in 1864 and over 70% of the southern population weren’t owners. States rights (limited government) is what confederate soldiers said they fought for and home too duh.

Worse strategy. That is why they lost. The north was tactically inferior but strategically superior. The north prioritized navy, diplomacy, and threats to the international community (threatened war against several countries and raising the unpopularity of slavery.
The north prioritized logistics and political economy, while the south favored maneuver and operational effectiveness. Very foolish.

Uhm Major General Nathaniel Banks wasn't much of military ground commander. One of many Generals on both sides that should never have been put in charge of military Division let alone active Army in campaign. Part of the reason why loses were show large operation, and none of the Forces were organized and put in place to support each other.

The CSA’s troops generally stayed in their own states. If needed in another location, they stayed put. Guys from Virginia did not go to The Carolinas if needed, nor the reverse. Not the case for Union troops, they went where they were needed; at the beginning there was difficulty, but later was more successful. Good clip!

The confederate army was outnumbered and outgunned by 5 or 6 to 1. Despite that, they were able to give the union army hell for 4 years and won more than their share of battles. Eventually it came down to numbers, that's why the confederacy lost. If the numbers were just slightly more even, things would be very different today.

Only the losing side is ever charged with war crimes, example Sherman's march would have been prosecuted if the north lost. How many US officers did thing just as or nearly as bad as the WW bad guys

I see now that the Confederacy did attempt stateless strategy too. But in the end, the Union forced them to play defensive most of the times. Am I correct about this
