The political will for preventing slavery west of the Mississippi River wasn't overwhelmingly strong until the 1850s when _Bleeding Kansas_ erupted.
Namely, the Border Ruffians from Missouriwith their capitol at Atchisonfought against John Brown's freedom forceswith their capitol at Topekain a mini-Civil War localized entirely within the Sunflower State.
Just before bleeding Kansas, Congress decisively passed the _Compromise of 1850_, which let all of the Western states (except California) decide whether to allow slavery.
And even after Kansas became the 34th (and a free) state, many abolitionistsincluding President Lincoln himselfsupported the _Crittenden Compromise_, enshrining slavery in the Constitution, so as to prevent the Civil War.

Unfortunately, you missed a LOT of Main's history of that era, particularly Northern Maine, which was heavily Francophone and Roman Catholic. The Webster-Ashburton treaty in the late 1830's finally resolved just WHERE the border lay; before that many people living in the disputed lands called the area the Republic of Madawaska, and more-or-less governed themselves. The Aroostook war of 1838-1839 convinced the US to negotiate the border (previously, WE claimed lands up to the St. Lawrence, and Britain claimed lands down to central Maine. My Acadian ancestors came from this area.

In the beginning I was a bit put off by the video's heavy handed anti-Federalist perspective, but by the end, this added much to my knowledge of Maine's statehood. Up to this point, I had basically known only the final act, the need to balance Missouri with a Free State. Learned a lot here.

You should make a video on Vermont, which would be interesting.
It was originally part of Canada, then became an independent republic during the American War for Independence. Eventually it joined the US a few years after the US became officially independent.

I remember reading a book about the history of Maine and during this period it was described as 'a colony of a colony'. I'm a Mainer and I feel this gives my state a unique place in American history. We are a rugged bunch, that's for sure!

I know the video states it, but the label for Henry Knox is flat out incorrect. He should be listed as Secretary of War, not Secretary of State.
