Brainteaser: Can you fit the wood into hole -- + Bonus Puzzle chinareds54: Took me about three minutes. It's immediately obvious that you cannot make a straight cut, so the most likely candidate will be some sort of staircase cut. You need to reduce the width by 1 and increase the length by 4, so if you cut horizontally halfway (4cm, dividing the wood into segments of width 1cm and 2cm, then cutting vertically for 1cm before continuing for the other 4cm, you can move the middle cut of one piece to the end of the other, making it a 2 x 12.

There is another way of cutting it. first we cut it vertically on one side from a point on a 1cm mark to the pointed part in the other side. and then if we slide the vertical piece over the other till a length to make 12 cm. the extra part which comes out cut the part and fit it in the upper corner

You can-t cut the wood into two pieces such that both will fit exactly into the hole. You haven-t allowed for the kerf of the cutting process. There will always be some wood lost as sawdust or otherwise destroyed, which will leave the corresponding partial volume of the hole unfilled

Thank you Ammar for the puzzles, but I think the bonus puzzle (5 little squares) should be the main puzzle of the video.
And the one with the wood and hole should be the bonus.
You can't eat dessert first, and than eat meat and potatoes.

Eh. Cutting it is too inefficient. I saved time by just turning the wooden plate on its side and slid it through the hole. He didn-t say it had to fit the dimensions the same or we couldn-t think 3 dimensionally. ;-P

That's what she said.
(I'm sorry. I don't see any comments about the title, so I did it myself. It just doesn't feel right if not a single person makes the obvious joke)

How about cutting the 8cm (length) wood as 2cm X 4 pieces. Now turn the wood such it have 3 cm (width) X 4 pieces = 12cm length with 2 cm width which fits exactly in the hole.

I got the wood piece question correctly -. i was too quick to see the answer and i failed in the bonus question. But i understood your explaination.

This puzzle is wrong totally wrong. If you cut the wood with saw extra wood will be eaten by saw. There will no exact 2cm result

Cut the wood vertically into 4 pieces of length 3 and breadth 2. Problem solved Now place them next to each other horizontally.

Your first puzzle is similar to a one in which rectangular sheet say 16 x 9 to make square sheet 12 x 12 in a single cut and paste
reply

Can also solve by cutting 8 by two putting in hole and cutting remaining in 4 by 1 and stacking on each other

reply

As usual, the presentation was ambiguous. I would strongly encourage you to word the puzzle more clearly.
