Auxiliary Notes (Non-Harmonic Tones) - Music Theory

Learn how auxiliary notes and escape tones work, a useful melodic device you can use to improve your melody writing. Melody notes usually work best when they belong to the prevailing chord. However, by only using notes that belong to the chord (harmony notes) melodic lines can become boxed in and tend to jump around too much. This is where inessential notes come in, such as passing notes, anticipatory notes, changing notes and auxiliary notes. In the case of an auxiliary note, a note is sounded that belongs to the prevailing chord. It then moves up a tone or semitone then comes back to the previous note - this is an upper auxiliary note. When the same pattern occurs but the middle note is a step down from the first and third notes, we call this a lower auxiliary note. Quick Question: What's the difference between Anticipation notes and Auxiliary notes? Both provide a feeling of unrest which is then resolved as shown in your two videos.

Am I right in saying they are the same as mordents except they cannot be chromatic and are used in conjunction with the harmony?
