The best way to make any new year's resolution stick is to simply not make any.
Why do I say this?
Because humans have a tendency to go for a couple of weeks and then when they feel successful, they reward themselves with the behavior they've been trying to avoid. A treat, if you will.
Say you're trying to eat better and after a few weeks, you figure it's ok to have that slice of cake or that pint of ice cream. Because you've worked so hard, you deserve it.
The same could be said for just about anything. Vices, addictions, finding new hobbies, making new friends and on and on it goes.
The problem being that you have a limited quantity of willpower. So how do we fix that problem?
Instead of making a year long resolution, make it a week long resolution and when the week is up, reward yourself with something that will further assist in that goal. Making one week long resolution after another.
Say your goal is to save money for an example. So you're gonna put away $5 every week and avoid impulsive spending.
You get through the week, haven't spent much and you even put that $5 away. What's your next course of action?
Well you've done so good this week and you've been eyeballing that fancy, new phone.
No!
So what could you do to further that goal?
How about putting away a further $20 as a reward? Or whatever amount extra you have.
Use smart rewards to help influence your smart goals. Instead of taking two steps forward and one step back. This will help prevent sliding.
Don't believe me? Give it a try! See for yourself.

I found it helpful to start before the new year to get one habit down before adding more before the new year. I began intermittent fasting in November to get used to it, so I could more easily focus on trying new foods, daily walking, and food journaling without burnout. Since fasting is a habit now, the other stuff comes easier.
I also don't tell myself that anything is a lifestyle change until I'm used to it. Change is scary and telling myself that this is how it's gonna be forever makes me wanna quit. So I allow myself that opportunity to quit whenever I want, or to have a cheat day once in a while. That surprisingly makes it easier to stick with it and reduces my cheat days!

my new years resolutions (almost 2022 edition)
- start reading regularly (steps: place current book on nightstand to remind me, 15 book goal in 2022, charging phone farther from bed to not get distracted while reading)
-procrastinate less (steps: i just bought a weekly planner with a notes page on the side (leuchtturm1917) to help plan my goals and be able to makwe habit trackers and todo lists, and start consistently using the pomodoro method when working)
-start learning german (steps: download duolingo, start slowly, one lesson a week, just during free time)
happy new year everyone and good luck on your resolutions!

Whoh. I do this. in fact this is how I planed to go ahead. well. not because of any new year resolutions. I don't believe in that thing. but still. this is how I planned to go. also same steps too. I'm also gonna give myself a reward after I completed my second step since it's comeing to an END soon. ah. man I wish I could do something about this triggers. but unfortunately I cannot change them though. but that's okay. I'm doing all right yesterday was a challenging one. most of the triggers were avoidable. again. and I did complete my target. so now soon. I'll end this step. but till then dude. remember. to. be. patience

3 years ago i decided that I wanted to be an artist and live out of that but I would draw once in a couple months and every time I did so I would fell frustrated because my art was bad that it would make me want to draw even less and when I saw that video I thought I can still decide to draw everyday this year and in 4 months I made more progress than i did in almost 3 years and still have a whole life to improve
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for the motivation
(Sorry for bad English and lack of Punctuation it's 2: 30 rn and I just felt so proud of the drawing I made that I wanted to thank before going to bed)

It's hard for me to find any sort if motivation. I have goals, but no specific driving force. Whenever I work on them from time to time, I always like it, but I quickly settle back into habits and do nothing once more. Even when I offer myself a reward it doesn't motivate me to do so, I just work around it. So now I'm going to try to limit my comfort by taking away things and time spent on them and try the list making/planner thing. I already have a goal sheet and specific goals daily which are bare minimum for most. I'll update if it goes well and I remember.

6 really is my least favorite. I mean, i get that u wanna limit screen time, but DELETING ALL YOUR IN APP PURCHASES COMPLETELY AND LITERALLY CAN MAKE YOUR DAY AND A WAY TO CONNECT WITH FRIENDS? In the name of Charles Calvin, that is absurd as frick! I know u can reinstall but still! At least when you limit screen time and not delete the app u can still have access to it, but if u delete it, youll miss out on the TOPPAT AIRSHIP for Reginalds sake!

3: 10 If you want the darkness to go, open your drapes, and bring in some sunshine.
Not gonna lie, that is a good quote, but the way you set it up to rhyme with a musical tone but didnt finish it with a rhyme triggered me. I was expecting let the sunshine glow, let the sun glow, let the sunshine show, or let the sun show.

One of my new year resolutions was to drink at least 5 glasses of water a day. so. I'm thinking that maybe to make it 'stick' i could keep a glass beside my laptop where I usually work/play, and even more maybe I could keep a pretty cup? like something that makes me WANT to just drink something in it. likeee water! hope it'll work
reply

i think the best way to make it stick is to not see it as a new years resolution its better to just start working towards your goals at whatever time you want, not when a new year comes. You also have to love what you are doing. If you are forcing yourself and you hate it you will give up in a couple of weeks.

Ooh-It only process in my head that its (the new year) is until March, or April-
But also New Years isnt my biggest time I look forward to cause Ive realised Loud noises cause panics attacks for me. So I just dont care, I just go with what the world throws at me-

If you're feeling depressed -
Talk with me. I'LL BE A FRIEND.
How can strangers be friends?
-See my name. Best if luck. I'll be a good listener.
What's your purpose?
-My purpose is I wanna feel a depressed person is smiling. What can be greater than this?

The thing of visual reminders is sooo true, last year i wanted to be healthier and i started from tiny habits like drinking a lot of water. I put a water bottle on my bed side table and now i drink even more than 2 liters a day!

Every time I mention I want try a reward system to help me get more motivated with depression, my parents take that as a context to indulge, for some reason. Ive slowly learned to not say anything and just quitely try it.

I think my New Years resolutions would be making a monthly budget, try to find some time to work out with weights, do meditation with headspace on Netflix, and if I save enough, I want to try rollerblading again
reply

I do want to stop thinking poorly of myself and maybe work on mindfulness or concentrating on daily tasks. I'm still trying to figure it out, but luckily I can get it sorted by Chinese New Year. ;)

YESSS to writing lists and keeping a planner! I find that REALLY helps me just prioritize what I need to do especially because I tend to be very scatterbrained
