What's the Deepest Hole We Can Possibly Dig?

What's the Deepest Hole We Can Possibly Dig? interestingly, if we were to decide to build downwards instead of upwards we could effectively put a geothermic energy instalation at the lowest levels able to power not just the residence but likely an entire cityblock, central heating would also be no problem offcourse, you could even use it for desalination purposes, letting salt water drive the system and catching the steam at the top, remineralise it to drinkwater conditions and voila, you could in addition utilise a tradition steam turbine with sterling engines which could hug a massive tank of the desalinated water on top and the lowest point of the system down below to have an even greater temperature difference than if the cool side were just the surface temperature above
maybe its just wishfull thinking but the idea clearly beats -the line- in both purpose and plausability

I honestly think we should try, go to a desolate desert or tundra section off a massive area and start digging down as if we are building a quarry or an open air mine, but at an absolutely massive scale, in effect an inverted piramid of sorts, just more stable and allows the hole to be much wider, the goal should be to just go all in on this, really try to get as deep as possible all the while investigating the minerals and soil as we go until we reach our limit, likely due to the extreme heat at which point we start designing equipment that let's us go deeper still, ever further
who knows maybe it would open up possibilities for geothermal energy and desalination if you use seawater for the steam

You could drop a superheated volume of tungsten, and if hot enough, the tungsten should melt its way all the way to the core. The deeper the material goes, the hotter and softer the rock becomes, so the problem would be that beyond a certain depth the -rock- would immediately flow back into the hole. It would be like drilling through water, unless you can make a liner that will hold up to pressurized magma at whatever temperature it is at depth.

reply

it should really be an invitation to push our boundaries, and in fact overcoming problems is what advances civilisations as the methods and technologies used and the discoveries made would carry over in advancements in other sectors of human endeavor, for instance creating equipment that can effectively withstand the heat and pressure at these depths would carry over into things like space exploration (for instance materials for suits and verhicles)
reply

We currently don't have the technological capability to dig that far down and even if we did no human could survive the pressure and temperatures at those extreme depths. I would also suppose that at that temperature and atmospheric pressure found in the depth would be an engineering nightmare. New alloys and technology would need to be invented to even attempt it. He DID answer the question and -unknown- is an acceptable answer.

Define hole. If I dig a hole from the surface and hit a cavern, does the depth of that cavern also count towards the depth of my hole? Similarly of that cavern is full of water does it still count?
If natural formations count and holes filled with liquid count then if we dig a relatively shallow hole into the magma chamber of an active volcano then technically you just dug a hole to the center on the earth

We can only dig so far until we start running into thinks like gasses. I-ve worked on oil drilling rigs for 12 years. Farthest I-ve drilled was 15, 000-. That can take a month or longer to drill. The formation can get really compact and make it hard to drill through. Sometimes not even drilling 15- from a 90- connection during that 12 hour shift. So we can go pretty deep, but it-s not really safe.

Man, I wanted to like this because the subject is so interesting - but it just isn't very good. I'm always going to wonder if the digging progresses, if the pixels of crust get smaller, darker, maybe some gems here and there. And hopefully to some good pizza crust _ the kind with the mozzarella in it.

How can you say -tiny insignificant distance-? Traffic in Lisbon is infinite! It would take ages to get there.
Also, disappointed that there isn't a side-comparison through all holes and that you missed tackling the question in the title of the video.

The deepest hole manking has ever dug is the trillions and trillions of americans taxpayers money hole the corrupt polititians have dug in people's pockets.
Nothing compares to that. And keeps on growing deeper and deeper!

Is it messed up that I kinda want to fall down that shaft that takes 30s to get to the bottom? I mean it-d be cool if I didn-t splat but it just seems like it-d be a wild ride

Capitalists: We're going to dig the deepest hole ever made to find oil and make bank
Communists: We're going to dig the deepest hole ever made because why the hell not

reply

these are the deepest holes dug so far, but how far could we really dig if like you said, it's our main focus and we use all money and technology available for it
reply

this video is insanely nostalgic, i used to have some weird interests but sometimes i refind this and it reminds me of fun times when i was younger and curious: )
reply

I dislike how instead of actually answering how far we could go if it was humanity-s #1 priority, he just lists the depths and the furthest we-ve gone.

The video is probably done in the metric system (kilometers, meters etc) because the whole world uses it except for just 3 countries (like the US) don't

No one asked, but Exxon has drilled some deep water wells that are as deep as the Marianas Trench. Deepest I could find onshore are 6. 2km deep.

The Bingham Copper Mine is massive. Calling it -The biggest open pit mine- is honestly a mild tittle because it's incredibly vast.
reply

If we can dig a hole to the exact center of the earth, we should drop joe biden into it. But darn it, our technology cannot do it.
reply

The deepest hole in the world is an asshole - but as for the video it's self it was educational. Thank you for sharing.

But I-ve seen it happen in a Looney Tunes cartoon. Sylvester the cat went all the way down a hole and popped out in Japan!
reply

Not sure it's a wise idea that we puncture the earth mantle to get to the Core. something says just not the best idea
reply

Z44-Chavyo is actually the longest well but not the deepest one. The Kola Superdeep Borehole is still the deepest one
reply

Buddy appreciate you efforts but what have you smoked-! May be your title changed after a bong hit. seriously. -
reply

If it drilling bore holes gets too hot seems like and open pit mine is the best option would let's heat escape.

I've looked through some amount of comments and still not found the classic song Diggy Diggy Hole by The Yogscast.

. so what's the deepest we can dig O. O? I mean, now I know what's the deepest we have dug. Not the same.
reply

Wrongly Labelled Video scam, this is talking about the deepest we have dug not what can we possibly dig.
reply

How deep? Whatever you feel constitutes sufficient remaining distance to be let down fir a proper burial.
reply

I have been in the Bingham canyon or Kennecott mine, its so cool and a great perspective from the entrance
