How Big Do Hurricanes Get?

How Big Do Hurricanes Get? To be honest, Tip was a very influential storm mostly because of its enormous wind field that affected the Eastern parts of the Philippines. But there are more typhoons that could rival Tips strength, typhoon Haiyan in 2013 a super typhoon, that caused massive damage to Visayas and caused massive death tolls with more than 6000 people dead and 1. 7k people missing after its aftermath, rivaled Tip with its rapid intensification and wind speed that rose over it. Haiyans wind speed was estimated to be 200-205 miles per hour by some meteorological organizations worldwide, but it was approximated at 195 mph. Unlike Tip, Haiyan was very damaging and made landfall on the Philippines. Tip only affected the southern Japanese islands and Taiwan which didnt create that much damage and death tolls as expected.

Here in the Philippines, rain is very common and we experience 20 typhoons per year, or even worse, 25.
The rainy season is where too many typhoons develop due to climate.
We experience the strongest typhoons per year. (2023) Typhoon Mawar or Betty
The weather system here is Southwest Monsoon, if a low pressure is in the PAR, it slightly enhances the southwest monsoon.
However, tropical depressions, storms, typhoons and super typhoons can fully enhance the southwest monsoon (If two typhoons are inside the PAR it means the southwest monsoon is now ENHANCED and floods are very common at these times
However, if one typhoon is inside PAR, floods are rare.
We also have wind signal and news broadcast in our country just to stay safe.

5: 36 it-s important to note when Sandy did reach its maximum size, it-s winds had slowed down to Cat 1 strength but it had a pressure of a Cat 4 when it hit New Jersey. Typically with any kind of cyclone (tropical, subtropical, or extratropical) keeping the pressure the same but increasing its wind field weakens the Pressure Gradient Force and the winds slow down. But still a devastating storm. Plus Sandy was more of a subtropical storm by the time it hit NJ so it was getting lots of Baroclinic enhancement.

I remember when hurricane George hit Puerto Rico in 1998, I learned from a teacher there were 5 categories for hurricanes, and Georges was Cat. 4. I remember I asked my teacher if we wouled ever see a Cat. 5 hurticane. He said it wasnt likely. 19 years later Puerto Rioc was hit by hurricane Maria, a category 5 hurricane.

As a Filipino, I can't believe that u did not add typhoon ondoy 2009, typhoon Pat 1957, typhoon rolly 2020, typhoon Ulysses 2020, typhoon Odette 2021, typhoon Lannie 2021, and the most destructive one, typhoon Yolanda 2013 the year when I was born

As someone who has experienced hurricane Harvey, it wasn't that bad, but it did make us basically have to rebuild half of our house. While my neighbor's house was unscathed, maybe that was just because it affected Dallas more than Houston.

I live in eastern Ohio and remember walking through Hurricane Sandy. It oven Halloween weekend, so we had dressed up for school. The wind wasn't that strong all the way out here, but boy was I soggy by time I got home from school.

Right now, I have experienced ts Barry, c4 Laura, and c2 delta, delta was the highest windspeed, Laura was the biggest and strongest, and barry was the smallest and weakest, none of friends or relatives died from all 3 storms

tropical storms and tropical depressions are apart if the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale (sshws, so tropical storm marco would-ve had place on the sshws scale, just not as a hurricane

Please stop adding climate change to everything. So far every climate model has been completely wrong. What we we do know is that climate change is political, and not scientific.

Aside by The Bhola Cyclone, 1991 Bangladesh Cyclone was among the deadliest and powerful tropical cyclones on record. Nearly 140000 people died in this category 5 cyclone.

Katarina was a Cat 3 not a Cat 5. Katrina wasnt even that bad compared to other hurricanes. It was poor maintained levees that very easily bursted. Also faulty pumps.

I remember hurricane sandy back in like 2010 or so. The east coast of the US was getting slapped by the hurricane and I was just having a fun time trick or treating.

Strongest typhoon in the world today is obviously STY HAIYAN -YOLANDA-. Reaching 315kph -195mph- but its size is 1k km and also has 10k fatalities estimated.
reply

5: 54 is not actually true. Typhoon Haiyan actually rivaled and surpassed Tip when it struck the Philippines in 2013. It had a peak wind speed of 197mph.

4: 37 I-m sorry but he said Hurricane Patricia existed in 1979 instead of 2015 and I think you made many viewers released this mistake you-ve made.

In the Philippines typhoons are common here that most people aren't even surprise if theres 2 typoons that's hitting the country in a single year

Hurricane Sandy was it a hurricane it was some type of thing but it was in the winter because hurricanes don-t happen in the winter

6: 10 -But imagine the damage it could-ve caused if it had hit somewhere at its peak strength. - Didn-t it hit water?

Have you guys heard of Typhoon mawar? It-s about to hit Guam which is where I live. I really hope this is harmless.
reply

Correction: Hurricane Patricia formed back in 2015, not 1979. I'm guessing that you confused it with typhoon tip
