Why 1/3rd of France is Almost Empty

Why 1/3rd of France is Almost Empty The notion of the feedback loop really applies to hyper-rural areas of France, but there is a political issue at play. There is constant political pressure to reduce spending associated with the expansive welfare state, and one of the big expenses that is frequently cut is rural administrative services, like small hospitals or post offices. Add to that the fact that country doctors get older and retire without any successors, unprofitable train lines are left in the dust or outright closed by the SNCF and you have adminstrative and medical -deserts- forming. That being said, you also find people who leave cities to live in the countryside, either because they can commute or work from home, which poses other problems because they sometimes clash with local tight-knit communities (who see everyone not from their village as -hors-sein-, or outsider, something I have seen myself.

It-s no different than New York State really. My county has just under 50, 000 people and 2, 000 in my village. We thrived with factories in our golden days since we were on the Erie Canal but they-ve all closed down or moved. Now farming is the dominating profession and most people commute to larger cities like Albany. That harms our local economy and younger generations move for college and more opportunities. I did that, but am looking forward to a new job back north so I can get involved in protecting our historic buildings and landmarks.

I was born in that zone and lived my childhood in it. I had to move (for work obviously) and when you keep living in that zone, you struggle to pay everything even if everything is cheap because no work, no opportunities. So yes, for tourists or people from big cities it's nice to come or to buy a cheap house but if you actually live there, it can be so hard.

I also live in the -empty- area of France. It is magnificient! I want it to stay like this too. but sadly, I think people are realising the virtues of 'country' to 'city' or busy coast, alors- people are trickling back. No sm-rt city wanted here! Incredible quality of life here!

I think the trend will start to partially reverse as more tech jobs go remote. Smaller towns and cities with more open space, natural beauty and more importantly cheaper prices will attract younger people. Crammed cities are depressing.

8: 45 Nope, the French government never tried to fix the issue, in fact, they even worsened it through decades by centralizing everything in big cities, like reducing local taxes, making small villages struggles to get a good infrastructure.

To be fair, 90% of most countries are completely empty.
All of humanity that lives today wouldn't fill the Grand Canyon, and the entire world's population could all live in North America with room to spare.

reply

Maybe that will become a chance in the near future. When a collapse will happen, we may be more resilient with less people per square kilometer. Easier to feed, easier to live together-

You miss a point, the women problem. Almost all women left the the countryside because there is nothing to buy (clothes, accessories and other useless things, no women -> no kids.

Oh my God, I am so happy to hear that. Everybody else thinks that France looks like a hexagon too I thought I was the only one and I thought I was an idiot for it.
reply

tbh when i see the action of the globally -impactfull- countries and what france did when it was on top of the world, im happy our global power is in decline
reply

Weird thing, the only time I have ever heard anyone refer to France as l'Hexagone is when they are explaining why France is called l'Hexagone.
reply

May i add that france is absolutely not the same sise as india, france is not a tiny country but small in comparison to india
reply

I live in that empty zone.
After going to Paris for 1 month, i can guarantee you that this empty zone is really good, its so called

reply

mountains, wildlife, and agriculture, that's why it's -empty-. still there are cities in it, (a lot) quieter than paris of course
reply

France: 60% of our population lives in 60% of the country! What's up with that population distribution?
Canada: Hold my beer.

One of the proposed solutions was to build factories in the diagonal. Really cheap cost and at the center of the Country.

I wish all Of France was empty. I wish a certain mustached man had been able to do away with them like he had planned.
