Why China is Killing Asia's 3rd Longest River
video description
Even if there is no dams at all but lack of rainfall and also due to the effect of global warming, the surrounding area will definitely dry up.
They can have MILLIONS of DAMS, but if there is a lot of volume of rains, the surrounding places will not dry.
Therefore, it is the RAINFALLS that will change the situations, NOT THE DAMS.
Nobody can beat the power of mother nature. Dams will only help a little of controlling the flood from heavy rainfalls or release just a little more water during dry seasons. It is by far the mighty mother nature of mighty rainfall that determine wet or dry lands.

Given the primary audience it is no surprise this video is misleading and try to blame everything on China. Even the MRC stated the low water level is due to climate change and lack of rainfall, not dams in the upper section of the river. Also, dams slow down water flow, it can't just hold the water forever. For hydroelectrical generation to happen, the river has to flow. China is not diverting the water elsewhere for irrigation. Unlike the once mighty Colorado river that can no longer reach the sea due to diversion for agriculture upstream. I bet Mexico is a lot more mad about that than any of the SE Asian countries.

No, China is not killing the Mekong. China can only affect less than 21% of the stream flow of the Mekong River. 79% of the stream flow is added to the river from nations downstream from China. So, the sky is not falling, sensationalism aside. It is different in other parts of the world where most or the entire river flow might originate from a single country. Turkey and Ethiopia are good examples. Ethiopia, for instance, accounts for 90% of the water discharged into the Nile from three river basins. Downstream nations like Sudan and Egypt add nothing to the river.

In general, hydro electric dams do not absorb water, do not diver water, hence do not lessen water downsteam. If population growth, agriculture and industry growth upsteam use up water, it is a matter to be negotiated be between affected countries.
Just like America use up Colorado River, making it dry up for Mexico. Even within America, Florida complains about Georgia use up Chattahoochee river water. River water problem tends to be a universal problem. It's not unique to China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Do you know about Hoover Dam on the Colorado River of the Rocky Mountain in USA. This is a proud of Americans. The biggest dam and first hydrogen electric power on the world. Have they said American killing Colorado River even though it's downstream has not more water? The Santa Ana River in south of California is the same. People can not see water flowing in the river at Santa Ana, but they don't say the dam was killed the river. The video is funny.

If China builds reservoirs upstream and uses the water for industry or agriculture, it will indeed be bad for countries downstream. But if only reservoirs are built to generate electricity, the amount of water will not be reduced, and the rainy and dry seasons can be adjusted, which is beneficial to everyone. Given that the upper reaches of China are mostly canyons and are not suitable for industry and agriculture, I don't think this video is correct.

China is a country that needs to disappear from this world as soon as possible
It's hard to find a country they're not hurting
1. The Chinese illegally catch all the fish in the South Korean West Sea
2. Fine dust from Chinese factories flies into Korea
3. They are secretly stealing LG and Samsung's technologies
4. Korean culture, which was popular all over the world, is robbing Korean culture by claiming that it originated in China

Laos and Thailand need to get together and build one of engineering's greatest feats: a Dam so long and high that it can maintain support even if all of the Chinese dams were breached. Withing a few years, Southern China will be a huge lake and Laos and Thailand can regulate the flow downstream to respectable levels. If the Chinese want to hog the water in a power play, show them what becomes of the greedy.

The author's sensational tone contrasts his ignorance of the basic fact that 80% of the Mekon's water comes from rain rich, tropical Indo-China. The upper reaches inside China are in high plateau areas with little rainfall. The drought in lower reaches if any is the result of global climate changes

Sounds like typical behavior of loser countries who love to resort to complain, instead of finding revolutionary solutions to problems they are facing. Think outside the box, make good use of whatever you currently have, instead of this finger pointing tactics.

This video say much about HOW China is killing the Mekong but little about the WHY.
The answers are really rather simple.
SE Asia is not China.
China can get away with it.
And China doesn't really give a DAM about what happens outside its borders.

10: 58 The fact that the Chinese have not only sequestered water but then will release water downstream without warning is beyond crazy.
The fact that Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos do nothing but try to talk to China is also crazy.

Use American measurement, or at least translate meters to feet. It woud be more enjoyable to my students and clearer in my mind. It means nothing to me otherwise. If this is a Canadian Vid, fair enough I will just stop watching.

How is the damn affecting the total water flow? The river still has 100% flow. The only difference is that it falls farther down passing over the damn. Still getting all the water they were getting before. What is this nonsense?

They are blowing up large numbers of mountains in their country to make access to more land for both housing and factories. Judging from that a mere river that passes through other countries shouldn-t bother them.

I'm starting to doubt if ASEAN has something to say about china's behavior in SEA, first the instability in the South China Sea and now this. When will there be a united statement from ASEAN to condemn China?

China accounts for only 14% of the water of Meikong, Laos 35%. It is just too easy to put the blame on Red China cos it is politically correct n the easiest way to bring about cheap nationalism.

As usual it is China fault. Those South East Asian countries at the southern basin can built hundreds of dam, but China cannot built a dozen more at the northern basin.
