How the US Conquered Hawaii & Made it 91% Empty

How the US Conquered Hawaii & Made it 91% Empty Yikes! Ive never heard such horrible pronunciation in a so-called -professionally- produced video! Certainly SOMEONE could have thought to consult a Hawaii native to correct the pronunciation of KAMEHAMEHA and KAHOOLAWE! -Ka- is a simple descriptor in Hawaiian, meaning -the-. -ME-ha- (MAY-ha) means -great-. Repeating it twice means -greatest-. -Kahoolawe- is pronounced -Ka-HO-o-LA-Vay-. Its not -MAW-lokai-. its MOH-lokai-. Also, you glossed over the fact that Native Hawaiians had no ownership over the land, like American Indians, and were convinced to divide property by the sons of missionaries in 1948. That changed everything. Also you neglected to mention the defeated Southern plantation owners in the Civil War saw Hawaii as a place to continue plantation ownership by growing sugar. It was these people who brought their white supremacy to the islands and, realizing the Hawaiians would not work for them, imported Japanese menials for labor with white Portuguese from the Azores as overseers. It was these people who overthrew the Monarchy in 1893, just 45 years after private ownership of land was certified in the -Great Mahele-, Hawaiians huge mistake. You also downplay how much the military is despised by the Native Hawaiian population, and all people of conscience, for the appropriation of their lands.

It-s worse than that. The US government considers Hawaii to be the lowest cost of living in the US and consequently reimburses Medicare the least of any state. That means the commercial insurances also reimburse the lowest. That leads to not enough money for hospitals to upgrade and buy equipment, recruit and retain doctors, or expand desperately needed services. Many people in more rural and less medically supported places like kona move to the community and then have to return to the mainland because of costs and lack of medical specialty support. Not enough beds for things like dialysis are available and patients don-t always make it long enough until a bed comes open at a hospital offering dialysis. Bed shortages also lead to extended waiting times for transfer for specialty care. The islands also lack enough aeromedical transport capability even when a bed is available. The cost of living is so high radiology techs, nurses, and OR scrubs cannot afford to live there and also move back leading to shortages in critical personnel. This leads to using travels to fill in the gaps further raising costs.

Yeah, sorry about that colonialism. The USA did Hawaii dirty. Still I suspect Japanese colonialism in the late 1800s early 1900s would have been even worse and it was going to be us or them.
As for the lost ancient ways, meh, I feel like today the entire world has changed to the point where everyone has to go out and get an education then get a job. The ancient ways of today largely involve smoking vast quantities of marijuana or drinking lots of alcohol. Those who join the modern world wind up much better off. I know, natives didn't ask for their land to be taken over by Europeans. But times would have changed regardless of whether the Europeans took over or not. Get out there and join the rat race or you'll find yourself homeless in paradise. It isn't fair but it is reality.
My ancestors were tailors and tanned leather in Germany. Today I'm an accountant in America. The world changes for everyone. The best thing to do is to change with it.

Not going to lie, your information while is largely accurate, it grates my god damned ears hearing you saying hawaiian words incorrectly. Ka may ha may ha is King Kamehameha prounounciation which is also not ancient hawaiian but modern hawaii. Kame hame ha is dragon ball z shit. Ka Hoe O La Vay = kaho'olawe. O ahh who is how you say O'ahu. I get you are doing it educationally but please say it right. If you want to over do it one step replace all the K's with T's as appropriate since it was a mispelling in translation for ancient hawaiian but even the locals are gonna give you the eye for knowing that. Also Ha Vai E = Hawai'i. Trust me, we dont penalize you for it but we judge you about it if you cant even say it correctly, it will win you points to say shit right with the locals.

Traditionally, gasoline is the most expensive in Hawaii out of the 50 states. Electricity is also a staggering 43 cents a kWh, whereas a rate of 13 or 14 is more typical elsewhere in the U. S.
However, some things are cheaper in Hawaii.
Out of the 50 states, Hawaii has the lowest estimated annual TCO (total cost of ownership) for motor vehicles. How is this possible, despite the most expensive gasoline? Easy. Short driving distances and fewer miles means less wear and tear on the car, and replacing tires less often. Great weather year-round also means far less rust damage to fix.
By contrast, Montana is ranked one of the highest states, despite relatively cheap gasoline, because of harsh winter weather and long driving distances, increasing costs of repairs.

If someone had the capital, growing produce on the big island would be a great experience, if you lived at the right elevation with adequate rainfall. Land isn't costly on the big island, but you would have to ship in a prefab home or build it from an old water tank. Of course, you would have to pick a site far from volcanoes! It would be great to grow tropical fruits and vegetables. The right variety of dairy goat to produce organic milk could be a nice business, but parasites would be an issue. Since groceries are costly, a local grower could sell for less than markets, but still make a profit.

-The landed western class of the island-. Very briefly mentioned, but it was US sugar and tobacco planters who took over the islands after the British had reestablished the Hawaiian sovereignty and its monarchy. Sensing a young nation struggling to find its feet, America had no qualms of riding rough-shod of the indigenous people. Thus, Hawaii became part of Greater America's possessions. Up until this time the territory had been called the Sandwich Islands, named after the Earl of Sandwich who funded the early expeditions.

It's pretty well known that only 75% of Kaho-olawe was cleaned up by the time it was returned. Also pre-contact native Hawaiian populations were anywhere from 200, 000 to 1, 000, 000, so the numbers you gave definitely feel like low balling it. Had to comment as a resident of O-ahu and someone who went to college and took Hawaiian history and cultural classes here.
Also the W in Kaho-olawe is pronounced with a V sound, as some other comments have indicated.

Democracy, Human rights and so on all are just words. Might is right. That's exactly what's called: RULE based international order which means -Accept the ground realities to escape obliteration. Everyone would eat according to it's geopolitical weight-
Still it is best of all the possible worlds that we live in.
Any superpower other than Anglo-Saxons may have been even worse.

wow. looked close at the pictures of the first hawaians. those original Hawaiians who came to hawaian islands and discovered and populated it. looked ALOT like the people from new guine papua. i think all that depopulation and all those single asian men pouring in for laborers is what makes the people look like what we call hawaians today

Oahu has all the people because it has the jobs because it has all the industry because it has the only really good harbors. Only recently, with the advent of tourism for the masses has an industry grown up on the outer islands, largely replacing large scale low value agriculture.

It shows how allowing foreigners into your country - without restrictions, leads to them replacing you, as the owners of the land, and makes any past wars for dominance and the loss of life irrelevant. Allowing large numbers in will be your demise, as it was for the Kingdom.

Hawaii would be a third-world impoverished country if independent, similar to other tropical island nations around the world. There is a reason there is no major industry here besides tourism. The hang loose attitude is the way people express their work ethic as well.

I was all in with this video until you revealed at the end that there are more native Hawaiians on the mainland than in the state. I literally got chills when I heard that. That's is an absolute shocking miscarriage.

Hawaiians should get some kind of subsidies so their not paying tourist prices to live if there born there, seems silly to have to compete with the buying power of honeymooners and billionairs.

I am born and raised on the Big Island. It may not be busy, crowded, and congested like Oahu but we enjoy the simple life style. It's not for everyone but it's how you want your life to be. -

Should have mentioned the Japanese saboteurs on the island and the murders they conducted. That-s atleast somewhat puts in contest the interment of the Japanese on the island
