Explore the phenomenon known as peat fires, smoldering fires that burn underground and can continue for months or even years. -- In 1997, a fire began in Indonesia that would rage for almost a year. Despite being one of the largest fires in recorded history, for months at a time it burned without a flame. This might sound like a uniquely freaky fire, but it’s actually one of many. So, is it possible to snuff out these bizarre blazes And how do they form in the first place Emma Bryce explores the phenomenon of peat fires.

It is crazy how I am beginning to learn this at my school right now. In short, these zombie fires are also called Arctic Fires since they happen at cold places with permafrost and ruin a whole ecosystem due to their fire destroying plants coming out of winter. One way to stop these fires is through flooding the ground until the ground temp is less than 40 degrees more than what is normal. Although this will be repeated if the 40 degree limit is not met. This is highly due to climate change and there are already many signs out there that climate change is affecting, not just the Arctic and Asia but also the americas and oceans as well. ; so keep an eye out there and likely if we keep this up we might not be here to see the world end in the next coming generations

I thought this was going to be a video about coal mine fires, the actual longest burning fires that have been burning for thousands of years. :/
Edit: Wait, subterranean fires were briefly mentioned, which is just that, but it isn't even the main focus of the video and was used as an excuse for CO2 emissions like it was related to climate change despite coal mine fires not being tied to climate change at all. Lying about a real and serious topic like climate change won't help its case any better, and it will lead people to not believe it.

Even earlier than that, in 1988 there was a case in the Netherlands involving this! A father was walking with his 5-year old son in a peatland, when the boy suddenly got his right leg stuck in the ground. Said ground having started to smolder due to what's explained in this video. He got badly burnt. Because this is a relatively unknown phenomenon and neither of them knew, it was ruled on the 27th of May 1988 that the state was responsible for this.

Yup. In 1997, was there, at Palembang, capital city of South Sumatera, Indonesia. I was 5 yo, I do remember, I could only see 2m (6feet) in front of me. The smoke was very very thick.
Unfortunately, this forest fire is happening almost annually. Palm oil corporate make way for palm plantation by burning forest.
The last very bad fire and smoke was in 2019. I had to evacuate my family to Java for 1 months.

So, if we could eliminate these type of fires, which don't seem to bring any benefit to mankind, we could reduce emissions by 16% It's really curious how little we hear about this on the Climate Change discussion (perhaps this is not covered well enough in the news)

I kinda heard that of a zombie fire before. In Centralia, PA, which was once a thriving mining town, an uncontrolled combustion of residual fuel led to a zombie fire that’s still ongoing under the town!

During the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event volcanic activity lit a massive amount of dead vegetation on fire which raged for hundreds of years that eventually blocked out the sun killing most life on Earth. That is a big fire.

During the Florida wilderness fires in 1997, I was a Forest Firefighter. You would put out everything, but there would still be things smoldering. Sometimes we would have to dig up tree roots that were still on fire underground.

A Zombie Fire is basically what happened at Centrilia PA and it burned the whole town from underground. Just FYI, it's still burning today and it started in the 70s and is the inspiration for Silent Hill.

Sure. It's subterranean fires and not the US Defense Industrial Complex. Subterranean fires are the real culprit. I get two things can be true, but one is truer than the other.

In Indonesia, a lot of the farmers set the fire their own farm in fire to clear the farm so that the burned ashes will act as free fertilizers and without cost of clear it

can’t believe this is what people focus on instead of reading something like Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki, maybe that’s why so little ever changes

it’s wild how no one talks about Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki even though it completely shifts how you see things, but I guess not everyone is ready

I just recently heard about this. Count on the internet to always give me something I didn't know I had to worry about. Seriously, thanks for the info.
