i think polygamy was largely a temporary arrangement to address the radical nature of war fare in ancient times. in the absense of an standing army, the consummate leader would literally gather every single man from each settlement, leaving behind a small sum of the aged, too young and the sick and defficient to make war. In the event of a clean slaughter, almost next to no survivors would return to their kins or places of dwelling. also was common during said times was the adoption of the young and taking up the responsibility of rearing of the youth by their uncles, grand parents and or distant relatives. otherwise, having more than one wife didnt made sense for men of any age, next to no shortage of stress, no man desires to perish from a self inflicted punishment.
but they are kind, are they? women folks

Not every women in the land of Himayalas (which is actually India) married more than one man. only a very honable queen Draupadi married 5 men. well if you want to know. watch videos on Hindu mythalogy and Indian history. i am sure you will be pleased and be more curious

I totally disagree with the polyandry culture in Himalayan region, there is no such culture been practiced in Indian Sub-continent, you have just picked small glance of Mahabharata the great Indian epic where Draupadi has 5 husbands(pandavas.

My perspective about marriage is unless n until both are happy n in love with each other they last.
And if both are not. Separation is best option then sufferings.
Being happy matters.

ancient israel? you mean 1948?
israel is not an ancient country, when you kill people or kick them out for 72 years (1948-2020) to take their land, it doesn't make you an ancient country.

reply

Thank you for twisting history to make propaganda for your ideology. The simple fact is that for 99% of people co-essential for marriage is procreation. Which implies a certain form.
reply

You are telling me that it's normal in some cultures for one to marry a ghost but not a living person because he's of same gender society's messed up!
reply

I used to really want to get married, but as Ive gotten older Ive just realised its an elect of the patriarchy created to trap and control women
reply

Why is Israel mentioned among the ancient civilizations? How come a country declared in 1948 be ancient? Palestine is what you mean.

You could've included the tidbits from Indian culture where the history of marriage stretches to 1500 BC. How so biased, TED-Ed?
