Having no background makes her timeless. This could be a portrait from 2020. The girl is likable and always contemporary. And she doesn't even have a name. You can make of her what you will. Vermeer is famous for his attention to detail; but here there's very little: no lacework, no military uniform, no tapestry, no tiled floor, no milkmaid pouring milk. The girl is frozen in time. There is no action here. She's not doing anything. It looks like you just called her name and she had just turned to face you, Yes? You want me? Well, here I am. How do you like this earring? I think it looks good on me.

I love art because you never really know for sure. Someone could just be going off a whim and feeling. And all you see is only part of the skill and work they put in.
And I used to go to museums with my friend who would throw his voice around like its the sculptures or displays or paintings who were saying funny things in high pitched voices. That made me love enjoy the time more that we were forced to spend in museums/art classes by our parents.
I like to think the artists sometime werent so serious too.

All pictures of women looking or not over hrr left shoulder. Just from the left side is enough for the mind to be more interesting also is a picture of the back of the body but no face. Why? Anybody?

That same lighting happens when you use an iPhone flash at night. Its very dramatic. Enjoyed the analysis, very good balance of technical and sociological context.

Is she turning towards you or away from you?
I think she probably just stood there for a couple of hours so Vermeer could finish his painting. XD

Its like a selfie or a photo taken by a man in close proximity.
Unlike his other paintings, this is a very natural and intimate.
