Man. Food isnt the only culprit. Sodas dehydrate the mouth because sugar, when the mouth is dry, it can ALSO build bacteria from the mouth, being exposed to the air, without saliva to help shield the lining in the mouth(epithelial tissue): The tissue starts to rot, also causing bad breath.
Sugar is also loves to sap the bodies water supply, which again, dehydrates the person. Like a well oiled machine the mouth needs to have saliva to help protect the enamel, from exposure to air, just like why skin covers the musculature, to protect it from open air.

Because we are designed very poorly. Evolution can't keep up with our development now. Our brain is running so fast that evolution does not have enough information to compensate.
