Idk how in Russia, but in Kazakhstan we have three times a week russian literature, and once a week Kazakh one, so we read War and Peace at 10 grade, the whole one semester, and then you just write bunch of essays. I understand that its of course one of the best, maybe even the best book in Russian history, but its also over complicated. Not everybody will get it. So I think its kinda not right to make others to read it, and making it obligatory. It would be better if school teachers would offer us what to read and to choose it to enjoy while reading. In original, especially in the beginning and in the middle, there are bunch of French text, so you just miss 20 + pages, to start to read in Russian xd

I love the fact that in the early chapters, Tolstoy's aristocrats express their emotions about perfidious Frenchmen in French. It's as though they cannot speak about emotional matters in their native Russian. Too many years of speaking the Court language of French at the Russian Court had eviscerated their appreciation for Russian.

Back in those days when TV and video games didn't exist, books were one of the only forms of personal entertainment. Naturally since most couldn't afford many books, long books that dont have a straightforward structure and almost act like a glimpse into another life to keep oneself occupied became very popular.

I've got a copy of war and peace. Hopefully when my business sells for Multi Millions of Dollars, I can retire at 40 and spend my days indulging in the literary classics that have revolutionised the modern world. Unfortunately until then, I'll have to put my neck on the grindstone and hustle to make life easier.

I have red War and Peace, it was so hard to follow the plot and remember all the characters and events that were related to each other. It is a challenge to read the book. Hard to believe this book is actually included in a compulsory school program of several ex Soviet countries.

It was all about justification of the traditional lack of freedoms in Russia. An individual is of no importance in this world-view. A strong contribution to reinforce subseqent Russian tyrannies. So do read it to understand them better!

lol, the Henry James comment made me giggle. i have read his The Turn of the Screw. James could only hope to have a book as good as War and Peace. his work was sloppy at best in my opinion.

Could you perhaps have left out the music to enhance the clarity of your narration? or is it now mandatory to enhance each and every activity with a background track? Just asking.

I tried. 100 pages and I just couldn't take it. A friends mom put it perfectly. It's like being in a plane taxying to the runway, but it keeps taxying and never takes off.

Actually, I've read this book. I found it really interesting and gripping. Maybe it's long, there are 4 books but reading them is worth time.
