The equals sign come from a pair of parallel, Gemowe (Gemini) lines, for no two things can be more equal. Gemini, the Twins, their symbol is why it is two lines, and vertically, though used, could be confused with 11; hence, they are horizontal.

Wonderful explanation.
Just a crazy idea, but what if the exclamation mark is just PERFECT for factorial, because it looks like an all until this point (! ) and that's just what factorial IS.
