Dig into the burden of proof fallacy, which assumes that something is true unless proven false and relies on arguments from ignorance. It s 1950. Anti-communist sentiment in the United States is at an all-time high. Senator Joseph McCarthy claims he has a list of communists who are influencing government policy. He makes his first accusation without providing any legitimate evidence, yet the senate committee still schedules a hearing. Can you spot the problem with this hearing? I love this video.
Read up on the McCarthy comme witch-hunt and found out that it was only a legislative inquiry rather than an actual criminal prosecution. Apparently the US had a law called Communist Control Act of 1954 which was struck down by the US supreme court as Unconstitutional.
While the legislative inquiries did defame a lot of people, it had no judicial teeth to penalize the names on McCarthy's list. The whole thing was more of circus rather than a proper trial. If this would have been a criminal prosecution in a court of law rather than a legislative inquiry, which do no posses judicial powers, the prosecution (accusers) would have the burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt, that the persons on said list were in violation of the Communist Control Act. Otherwise, these people were presumed innocent in the eyes of the law.

Before watching: probably yes? Let s see.
Oh it s about the argument from ignorance. That s an old one! I wrote an essay on Antony Flew s The presumption of atheism at uni that basically makes this point more concretely.

Wait, this is exactly what I see Republicans doing all the time. They make a claim, and then tell the media it's up to them to find the evidence. They provide no evidence, they expect the media to find it for them.

Ok now where can i get such a Demon Of Reason of my own for backing me up when i'm in an argument with people who claim to be intelligent but are actually the _opposite_ of intelligent?
reply

I wonder if there have been any recent cases in Congress where something was asserted but failed to be proven true? Good thing we are much smarter than those people in the 50s.

Demon of Reason: You're falling victim to an Argument from Ignorance; assuming something is true because it hasn't been proven false.

reaching a point where humans' cursed race has to require the devil's help to solve their problems. this is a new low. keep downgrading! lower and lower! human filth!
reply

Yep the McCarthy trials were a dark day and overall ineffective. But now we have a better way of recognizing communists: namely they just announce themselves.

So, if most of the world's population has spiritual experiences and claim there is a god, the burden of proof is on atheists to prove there is no god?

I'm so hyped that the Demon of Reason is a recurring character! Really enjoying this format and its content. I always learn a bit more with each one.
