The axolotl is also a conservation paradox: The iconic creature is Mexico s national symbol, and, because it breeds easily in an aquarium, a beloved pet around the globe. So many axolotls live in captivity that certain restaurants in Japan serve up the axolotl as a fried snack. Many thousands of axolotls a year are also used in scientific research: Because of their miraculous regeneration abilities, axolotls are studied in labs the world over. But in the Xochimilco canals around Mexico City, the axolotl s only remaining natural habitat, pollution and the loss of water habitat mean that the axolotl has become a rare sight.

I think the original pronunciation would be closer to ah-sho-law-tl (with the tl being the voiceless fricative? The Aztec language Nahuatl was not written, so the Spanish transcribed it when they conquered the area. In Old Castillian, x represented the sh sound, so the x's we see in Aztec words were originally sh's (like Mexico, since the ingidenous people called themselves the me-shee-ka.

I am part Aztec/Nahua and I unironically worship this adorable little wiggle regeneration monster. It is a shame they are critically endangered in the wild due to the rise of Mexico City.
Also, I never get tired of hearing about this adorable kirby water salamander
Thanks Ted Ed!

In fact, the head of government of Mexico City, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, is going to build an axolotl museum and research center for both the chilangos (as they say to the inhabitants of Mexico City) and for tourists from other states and countries.

Salamanders are a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance, with slender bodies, blunt snouts, short limbs projecting at right angles to the body, and the presence of a tail in both larvae and adults.

Imagine if we could regenerate like that.
Kid: moooom, Timmy took a bite out of my arm again!
Mom: dammit, Tommy, stop whining! It ll grow back soon enough and he s just a baby! Dinner will be ready before long anyway.
