On February 17th, 1974, Robert Preston, a maintenance worker, decided to take one of the helicopters for a joy ride and land at the White House. Because apparently that's what you do when you're bored and want to prove to the world your impeccable flying skills.

Clearly had mental health issues. So glad he only got two months in jail though. I wouldve also ordered mandatory three year probation with mandatory counseling and psychological evaluations just to ensure his erratic behavior did not spiral into potential violence. But the American justice system is so broken that today I fear he wouldve gotten 20 years. Our country focuses on punishment instead of rehabilitation like the Scandinavians do. We abuse prisoners psychologically and physically. And we often make it impossible for them to find a job after prison and even make them more hardened criminals while theyre serving time. We do this because conservatives are poorly educated and they make poor decisions when electing government officials. And Republicans are bad policymakers. But any educated individual already knows that so Im not saying anything you havent already thought if youre halfway intelligent.

Yep, I was in that unit and you wouldn't believe half the off the wall crap that occurred. My CWO had his brother in law a deserter living on post in government housing. This unit was an insane asylum with aircraft. Almost fifty years ago. Great guys, many stressed and burned from a certain overseas excursion or draftee's awaiting release. Partied 24/7 and partied hard. 68 to 75 maybe a little insane but made it out alive. A toast to those from my past except for a few who can kiss my ass.

He plea bargained at his court-martial, Preston pleaded guilty to wrongful appropriation and breach of the peace and was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of US$2, 400 (equivalent to $12, 442 in 2019. He had already been in prison for six months, and had to serve six additional months. After his release, Preston received a general discharge from the army, then lived a quiet life, married, and died of cancer in 2009.

A story and experience that will last his entire life time. Was it Worth every second of that 2 months in military prison? Absolutely!
Same goes for the Air Force Aircraft mechanic that stole a fighter jet and took it for the flight of a life time because he to had wanted to fly fighter jets but the air force turn his Application down for reasons I cant recall.

back in the day when you could just get shot at by the secret service, not die, and a judge is like 2 months son hard labor and you're good

If this was a 70s movie the president would have pardoned him and he would have become an awesome pilot and saved the world
reply

if this was today he prob would have been shot down when they realized that he was headed to the white house
reply

why would you steal a helicopter without permission?
Well if we all had permission to steal things. Lmao

reply

Either the secret service weren't shooting to kill or they were those storm troopers in Star Wars. LOL
reply

The helicopter is on display at an East Pennsylvania post. I wonder if Preston ever got to visit.
