Why is anybody feeling sorry for him? He manipulated the authorities so he could do exactly what the authorities tried to prevent, ignored everybody around him, ignored his friends, traumatized the people on the ground, and even if it was successful, he planned on using this event as a marketing tool for his 'parachute'. This is the epitome of ignorance and Darwinism.

So, not all inventors are geniuses! Contrary to some people, I don't think of suicide but of the lure of gain and notoriety! That's why he took a big risk! For the little story, the prefecture of Paris had asked the forces of order present, to verify that he would use a dummy and forbid him to make this jump himself! It was not the case!

Well better be glad the fall killed him because the way they snatched him up letting his neck bounce around like a ballon definitely woulda paralyzed him. And caused him alot of pain. Not funny but just goes to show how far medicine and common care for an injured person even from ppl who arent doctors has came

Everyone making tasteless jokes at his expense fail to understand that his life and ultimately his death were a great contribution to the technology that we employ today. For every SAFE controlled descent in modern times a small thank you is deserving to this man.

I've been remember this day very well since I was 4 y/o. I WAS Franz in a past life. I remember every thought I had while falling. I also remember the depression I was experiencing beforehand, that helped me justify jumping off Paris' tower

You cant invent something if your last name isn't at least similar to the name. Dr Robert P Chute is credited for the first successful parachute. With a name like Reichelt he never stood a chance

We shouldnt forgett about the German Schneider von Ulm who managed to build fully working wings one century before other people even thought sbout trying it. In the end of 1780

So after this they only granted permission for experiments using test dummies? He said he was going to use a dummy in the first place so what is stopping it from happening again?

This man was the definition of balls. He had the courage and an intense belief in himself and his work to do something very dangerous all in the name of innovation and creation.

Man its just even more sad that literally only two days before he jumped to his death, an American already tested it and survived, man, this whole story is just sad.

You got to admire the courage. someone had to be a 1st. blokes a legend. got it wrong. like. really really tragically wrong. but he's remembered. so hats off to that dude
reply

Wouldn't you have first chucked a weighted mannequin as a test? I mean, even at the turn of the century that would have occurred to me. Didn't one of his buddies suggest it?
reply

Albeit half way down he was wishing he was back at home lounging with a hot meal laughing and sipping brandy with family and friends in front of the coal fire.
reply

You can admire his ambition, I guess, but the only safety precaution he took was wearing a parachute. he built himself. and had never tested.

I know someone that was there. They say that right as Franz jumped, they played And I'm FREE. FREE FALLIN on the loudspeakers. What a way to go.

Good video. You kept it real. I guess that was the most respectful way to present the footage. Still, felt chat to watch.

In these kinds of things, people don't realize just how heavy their bodies are. until it's too late.
