If you're thinking that a car race from New York to Paris doesn't sound like a good idea because, you know, ocean and all, you'd be right. But that didn't stop the Great 1908 Automobile Race that started in New York and ended in Paris. The details of what went down are even crazier than the idea itself.

they re-ran this race in 2011. And you will never believe who won-
there are some other mistakes the Americans actually were given a 30 day credit because the Germans not only didnt drive up to Alaska they had their car put on a real road for a great number of miles and skipped going to Japan:
While the planned Great Race 2008 was cancelled as the approval and permits to travel through China were recalled, a second effort was mounted in 2011. World Race 2011 began in Times Square April 14, 2011, as competitors set out to retrace the route taken in 1908 from New York to Paris. [4] Ultimately, four of the starting vehicles, the oldest being a 1929 Ford Model A, a 1932 Ford 3 Window Coupe, the 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, and a 2007 Chevrolet multi-fueled Corvette, reached the Eiffel Tower in Paris on July 21, 2011. Participating in the 2011 race was Jeff Mahl, the great-grandson of George Schuster, the winning driver of the 1908 New York to Paris Race. [5]

I know of a cross country race thats even more bizarre! It took place in 1890, Started in San Diego and ended in New York City! There was all types of contestants, even one who couldnt walk! The Steel Ball Run was an epic race and will never be forgotten. Its even said to this day one of the riders was visited by a religious prophet! How bizarre?

you should really look up the full doc about this and watch it it truly is amazing story with so many more things that where left out from this short version but it is truly awesome fact in history long forgotten about

The part of the route from Seattle to Valdez is only accessible by boat or plane, I dont see the reason then that its in the race. You can drive it, but not at that point in time as the Alaska hwy hadnt been built yet.

Schuster is from Springville, NY, a small town 1/2 hour south of Buffalo. I drive through there often and there is still a mural of him on the side of a building on Main st with the Thomas Flyer.

Great video. Wondering.
-Are these cars still around anywhere?
-What was the top speed they got?
-Could this be done today?
-How long would it take today?

There was a movie about this in 1965. It starred Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, and Keenan Wynn. It was directed by Blake Edwards.

While the French and American spent most of the journey bickering, German just shut up and did the job well. Some things never changes innit

Imagine normal towns back then that they passed reacting to seeing a car for the first time. Must have been like watching a the first rocket to mars.

Where is the movie. Seriously you cant make this shit up. The french pulling the headlights infraction is one of the funniest moments in history.

. And then, 19 years later famed aviators Charles Lindbergh, Richard Byrd and others would simply fly planes from New York to Paris
reply

The Thomas Flyer had 60hp in 1908?
That must have been insane for the time.
And still more hp than my first car had in 1983.

So after all that hard work of getting from New York to Paris, you're arrested for not having headlights--THATS LIFE
