They also inspired Star Wars! I mean it the attack on the Death Star and Rogue Squadron were partly based on this raid and 617 Squadron.
A bit off and without wanting too brag I met at an air show Les Munro a former RNZAF pilot and one of the original 19 pilots and while on course for the attack run his aircraft was shot too bits knocking out much of the electrical systems including the radios, navigation and the weapon systems and he had too pull out and limp home. Basically he was the units Wedge!
But a cool old dude none the less and not some over the top romantic hero and it was a shame when he died about six months
later age 96.

Although Barnes is remembered for his 'bouncing bomb' it was his deep penetrating ' Earthquake bomb' that did far more damage all told, sinking the Tirpitz, destroying V2 factories, damaging u-boat pens and destroying many other targets like railway tunnels all of which had been safe from conventional bombs.

I read about this. They skipped over nets in the water and blew up dams, right? Fun fact: the engineer used trigonometry with two lights set at an angle so the pilot could tell they were 60 feet up when the lights shone on one spot.

The old bombers werent accurate but they could carry tons of bombs. So why didnt they just send 20 bombers and carpet bomb the entire area instead of having to engineer some crazy, bouncing bomb?

Wow! Your narration style actually sounds normal in this video and you don't sound pissed off like your previous videos. So much better! The music is a great touch too. awesome job Weird History.

Fun facts. There was a movie made about the raid called The Dam Busters. The scenes with the bombers attack runs was the inspiration for the Death Star attack in Star Wars.

I have walked across the Mohne dam in the early 2000's. Had never heard of bouncing bombs until my cousin explained what happened to the dam during the war

There's an amazing documentary about a guy who rediscovered all of the techniques and methods used to make these bombs from a few years ago.

To refer to the received resulting explosion of a dropped bomb, as that its been delivered. just seems really tactless and insensitive

Also, the Death Star trench run from Star Wars A New Hope was partly inspired by this raid. With that in mind: 2: 13 look familiar?
