Welcome to Marwen. The movie was just plain weird. Steve Carrell is great but the directing was garbage. There is a scene that really ticked me off. Mark is in court about to testify about the crimes that have been done to him. It had potential to be a heart wrenching, sad, and emotional scene. Instead, Marks doll character Hogey starts fighting nazis and Mark crawls on the ground avoiding the crossfire (bullets. The movie was more about Marks dolls then actually Mark. I feel like i saw more of Hogey then Mark himself. Not about overcoming his fears. The movie felt boring, i had no care on what the Marwen characters had to say because THEY ARE NOT REAL. They said based on a true story, they forgot to tell me 2/3s of the movie is dolls fighting.
The movie also left plenty of questions unanswered. When Mark is in Wendys house, he notices a photo of a young child. It says something like We miss you or You will forever be in our hearts. But We never know what happend to the child and why it is included in the movie. The movie also didnt tell us more about the side characters. The women of Marwen are Marks friends. But we never really go deep into who the characters actually are. Next, The movie ends with Mark and his good friend (Roberta) going out to eat some sushi, thats it. Nothing else, do they continue dating, do they end up marrying at one point? Lastly, this is my biggest frustration: In the end of the movie the film does not tell you what happens to the thugs that beat Mark up. Do they get a long sentencing? Do they get life in prison? You wont know because they wont tell you. This movie is very confusing, making you wonder if it is Marks fantasy or real life. There was no music that moved you, no emotional scenes. Unlike the trailer, the trailer felt moving and had a wonderful soundtrack. Im just truly dissatisfied with this movie.

The sentences the 5 received were adding insult to literal injury! Disgustingly ridiculous and beyond infuriating. Now I believe most places have hate crime laws that would have supplemented these losers sentences as a very serious aggravating factor.
The assailants also should have been forced to pay not only restitution for everything Mark lost (from precious personal memories, which are essentially priceless; but also for the psychological trauma and physical suffering he endured. The perpetrators should have been ordered to pay for ALL of Mark's medical bills (as well as treatment for his severe anxiety and PTSD he was left to struggle and deal with on his own, and including, sadly, the required therapies and aftercare he couldn't afford!
The justice system is so broken. I truly hope those 5 douchebags are wallowing now and see what their actions propelled this amazingly fantastic and courageous man into creating and achieving today! Efff you haters!

I lived two trailers down the road from Mark when I was 8-10 years old in the late 2000s. Until recently I never knew (or really asked) why the trailer down the road had a little village of dolls or why the man that lived there would sit outside wearing heels and a skirt. I remember once leaving a couple of Barbie dolls on Mark's porch because I wanted him to have them but was too scared to talk to him. It's so surreal to think that I knew the guy that inspired a Steve Carell film, but never knew his story. I wish to someday go back to that little trailer park and meet Mark again. I really hope he's doing well and is still working on his projects.

I don't care what anyone's dysfunction is, if it takes five of you to beat them up (which you shouldn't do, period) you're all pussies, bullies and cowards; leave the poor guy alone. Everyone has their own idiosyncrasies and I don't want anyone judging me for mine, so I try to give everybody the space they desire. If you're gay, cool; enjoy your life. Great movie I recommend anyone who has a great imagination to watch it was well made.
One has to do what they need to sometimes to cope, this man was very brilliant for sure especially dealing with what he had gone through to overcome his past and I applaud him for that since we live in a evil world of bad people bad medicine that can do more harm towards a person that sometimes it is better to work things out on ones own like this man did in his life.
The mind is a gift and mystery on how it can work but also how it can heal in time from damage.

mental illness is a serious issue. its obvious he had a mental issue before (the crossdressing/ alcoholism, all the other stuff. Its sad that he has had to crawl into a hole and be lonely to cope instead of trying to really conquer it. Its harsh to say, but most of america views playing with dolls and crossdressing as not stuff a standard adult male does. I hope he gets the mental therapy he needs to rejoin society: /

I read that he was simply in a bar, drinking and he happened to tell some young men he was a crossdresser, then elsewhere they said he was in the bar wearing high heels and panty hose trying to pick up men. I have known crossdressers who do that but they would never go out in public to a bar and hit on men. Their favorite go-to was Craigslist for men to get down with.

Artist Peter Shulman was emotionally abused as a child and handled his trauma by playing with miniature soldiers, model tanks and aircraft, and waging wars between huge numbers of opposing armies in outdoor settings. I saw the original documentary and the attackers were not NAZI's however I do like his work! WW2 diorama looks great, also I find it odd he can't remember anything yet remember's he like's to cross dress? Yet forgets his ex wife ( cant blame him for thst one )Selective memory much?

I watched the movie a couple of days ago and I loved it: D It's very dynamic and captivating with amazing cinematography. While it is certainly not 100% accurate, I think it does a great job honoring the source material while adding a new Hollywoodesque take to it.

Amazingly realistic looking figurines. I wish we had had those when I was a kid. The best we had were GI Joe and Johnny West. They were well made back then (circa 1970, not like the small, cheap-looking GI Joe figurines of today.

This is a better way to understand the origins to Carrells newest movie. Unfortunately I don't care for Steve or his rolls in his films except for Despicable Me, because it still doesn't sound like him.

The documentary is great but the movie is absolute garbage i don't remember anyone actually seeing it or remembering it existing after it came out it was clearly Oscar bait and nothing else.

It killed me when I heard that Mark threw AWAY his Negatives, making quality Reprints impossible! I guess he thought that they were garbage? Needs a Photography Class.
