What It Was Like To Be An Inmate At Alcatraz

The federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island, located off the coast of San Francisco, CA, opened in 1934. Until it closed nearly three decades later, Alcatraz was reserved for some of the most ruthless criminals. Life at Alcatraz was not just about confinement and punishment but discipline and routine. Not everything about Alcatraz was considered undesirable; in fact, some convicts even requested doing time at The Rock

Prisons today are more like Resorts. The Criminals have it better than many American Citizens, the only difference between jail and living at a Motel 6, is that there are bars on the windows. Prison is NO Deterrent today. There was a story here in Texas where a guy robbed a bank, walked outside with the money, and waited for the Police to arrive. When asked why he stated that he had it better in jail then he did living on the streets. Criminals are coddled and the Victims suffer, isn't it supposed to be the other way around.

I think it's very possible that Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers were successful in their escape. Many people have made the swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco and it's even been said that it's not as difficult as you'd expect
Now imagine having life vests and a homemade raft and having the intense motivation to make it that those guys would have certainly had, and I believe there is a good chance they made it.

The Bird Man of Alcatraz (Robert Stroud) never possessed a single bird at Alcatraz. Before that, he was incarcerated for decades at USP Leavenworth. After killing a correctional officer, Stroud was held in building #63 (special housing unit at that time) where he possessed and studied birds in the adjoining cell. He was definitely a parasite.

I took a trip to Alcatraz and when I went into solitary confinement or the hole it was so dark you couldn't see your hands in front of your eyes no matter how much time you would be in there it's that dark, I wouldn't last in there for 3 minutes before freaking out. Don't know how those men made it thru it?

The library saved my life in jail it was actually amazing the best part of being in solitary confinement. Im an introvert Id go on purpose!
Seems like the same rules we got now tbh! u dont deserve right in PRISON! However jail is worse than prison! I think it should be the opposite

The Anglin brothers had a homemade raft, paddles & life preservers. Your characterization of their escape is ridiculous. Photographic evidence, coupled with facial identification software, alleged eye witness testimony & more, suggests that their escape attempt was successful.

I did the tour like 20 years ago went of the tour and went down these stairs where there was a chain blocking it, I ended up in the courtyard when Clint Eastwood was sitting in the Alcatraz movie and smoked a fat blunt sitting in the same spot it was Kool

Its funny, At the end it says What do you think of Alcatraz, Well I think it was a real shit hole, and def. would have committed suicide if Id ever had to been there, Looks so damn depressing, not to mention those filty, nasty toilets, Id preferred to s outside!

Im gonna take issue with all the images that had nothing to do with Alcatraz in this video. You dont need a constant flurry of images for every single thing you say. For this video, it wouldve been fine to only use actual Alcatraz footage.

I grew up watching inmates make roads. Now inmates get college degrees after killing someone. I pay higher taxes. I love people, and understand hard knocks - but working it off to pay it back made sense to my young self.

Why do we spend fortunes on these institutions housing the worst of the worst criminals. They are in for life, they have no real life, nor do they deserve one. We could save billions by just putting them to sleep.

The guy in black and white photo with tattoos on his arms and chest has a bracelet on like a hospital bracelet and if my eyes aren't deceiving me it has a bar code on it so this photo is not legit

Absolutely crazy, heard a story about 4 inmates who tried to escape via a homemade plane, they were found dead
on the Golden Gate Bridge. Weirdest part is cause of death was electricity.

It's easier to break out of prison than a regular county jail. Jails are 3 walls and a metal ceiling that are all connected by welding. Older prisons such as Alcatraz were made of concrete.

prisons need to go back this way, there is way to much freedom in prisons, some do more in prison then some individuals i know as free individuals, call it cruel, well dont commit crimes.

Met JimQuinlan and bought his book when I was there. I snuck into a roped off area. It was total darkness but my camera flash lit up the shower room downstairs. CREEPY. Great photo though.

Till the FBI got a letter not long ago from one of the escapees who did survive the ocean after his escape from Alcatraz and that he had been living in middle America since his escape

I always thought it was crazy you can get your college degree in prison but cant in the free world without massive debt and time off of working to go to school

reply
