What Life Was Really Like As A Wild West Sheriff

Wild West sheriffs kept law and order on the frontier alongside fellow lawmen and the local citizenry. Theyve been dramatized, glamorized, and exaggerated in films and literature for generations and yes, the life of a Wild West sheriff was dangerous, but it could also be. weird

Interestingly, Henry Plummer was caught because during one of the bank robberies in another town, he used a specially engraved rifle the citizens of his jurisdiction had gotten him for being so good a sheriff. Because of this extremely identifiable mark, it was impossible to deny that the good sheriff Plummer was in fact, the leader of the gang of bank robbers terrorizing the area. Many of the gang consisted of people that were part of Plummer's posse the Innocents.

What kind of Sheriff I would like to be if I lived in the Wild West? Of course one who could use the pistol like an ace, someone who could take on a hostile group of 20 thieves and still win, someone who knew all the bonanzas in the area, someone who could talk to people like a president, someone who never drank a drop of alcohol, someone who always helped the little and weaklings, someone who could teach all people something. Wouldn't that be fine?

By all accounts, Tom McClaury was unarmed. He was killed by a shotgun blast from Holliday while reaching for a rifle in the saddle scabbard of a horse. Frank Clanton was also unarmed. Billy Claybourne left before the Earps arrived. All had just arrived in town and were preparing to stable their horses. There is some debate as to whether the Cowboys refused to surrender their guns or acted out of fear of the Earps.

i am liking your western videos. i subbed with the saloon video. one of the comments mentioned Wild Bill having an STD. that kind of blows my mind. i have read a lot of books on the west and never heard that. not doubting, just interested. i still watch Hop a long cassidy on saturday mornings. if i could go back in time, it would probably be to Deadwood, SD. at the time Wild Bill and Calamity Jane were there.

I think the idea of two guys facing off in the middle of the street in a fast draw to the death is just a Hollywood creation. I think most 'gunfighters' in those days killed their victims at close range, like across a card table or something. and the supposed accuracy is BS too. Most bullets went wide which is why they had to be with a few feet of each other when trying to kill each other.

Ok brother its been 2yrs since youve made this video but I just finished, Yellowstone, 1883 and Deadwood, so I needed something to watch to withdraw my addictions. I had absolutely no idea that Frederick Douglass was a US marshal. Absolutely fantastic videos! Hope you dont stop making them. And thank you Weird History! Youre awesome bruv!

You misunderstand the Dodge City local law. It didn't ban the possession of a firearm. It only banned the firing of firearms. If one used a firearm to defend oneself, the most one would expect to be punished for the discharge would be a fine.

Tombstone Arizona still has The Crystal Palace and (Wyatt Earps) Oriental Saloon. Both open and both attended frequently by townsfolk and visitors Tombstone. If you want a true wild west saloon, check them out in Tombstone, The Town Too Tough To Die!

I can only imagine how crooked and powerful many of these sheriffs and their Deputies actually were back in the day. thats a lot of power for a man to have while having nobody to answer too

Me? A Sheriff? Well. a Good, Well Mannered Gentleman with the Behaving ones. And a Bad, Mean MF with the unlawful. Two Revolvers on My belt, and a pair of Crooked eyes for trouble in my head.

You're a damned liar, Sir. They banned the PUBLIC CARRYING and discharge of weapons. They could not ban weapons in general. We have a Second Amendment that says that that couldn't.

Cops of today are too cowardly to stare down the barrel of a gun! They shoot people with cell phones or just at the sight of a gun even if its just in the vicinity of an individual!

I would have loved to have lived in the old west times even though it was tough and dirty but at least there was freedom and learning to survive the way we were meant to be

7: 48 HOW WAS HE NOT QUILTY HE SHOT A COP OVER A GAMBLING GONE WRONG MOMENT? Theres no way? Do you have more documents about this story? Self defense?
reply

So a sheriff is the only one that can arrest politicians. Only if the law of the land permitted it it does. But we live under Maritime law of the sea

I finally figured out who this narrator sounds like, least imo. It gives me big vibes of the guy who was the narrator for the sandlot

Did sheriffs travel around/ patrol the surrounding areas a lot or were the just sitting around on call most of the time?
reply

I'm sure 95% of the time it was boring as hell. Being a blacksmith was more interesting and even more dangerous over all.
