What Hygiene Was Like During the Black Plague

What was hygiene like during the Black Death? In the 14th century, the bubonic plague swept through Europe, wiping out as many as 50 million people - or more than half the continent. During this time, it was common for people to dump their chamber pots in the streets and sleep on dirty straw. These unsanitary practices attracted rodents and spread disease. Could better hygiene have prevented the black plague?

I can already tell you that this video puts the cart before the horse and I'll explain what I mean and any disbelief of my argument can be proven with documents and even court records from that time and this is not a conspiracy THEORY this is a fact of history with over 300 admissions to crime in a court of law that explains perfectly all this about the black plague, it was Jews who were in ghettoes that paid off other Jews to poison, they admitted to giving people satchels with gold coins as well as vials of poison in which the rabbis and other Jews in on the operation also admitted in court that they had withheld the information about the poisonings from the Europeans but told the Jews in their communities not to drink or bathe in the water for nine days and nine nights, every winter the deaths would drop significantly but when the water melted in the wells and springs they would again start dying by the boatloads whenever coming in contact with the water and over time the pattern of being in and drinking the water causing illness and death became noticed they stayed away from the water, it was the fastest spreading disease in history because people were paid to spread it and n their instructions for spreading it they were told what country, town and what particular bodies of water to poison, it was a conscious effort of humans, not rats which Hollywood and modern education lies about being the cause but people conspiring to deliberately kill people, the one country that had the largest portion of Jews being Poland was also the only one to not be hit by it, after over 300 Jews and the Christians numbering fewer than 5 we're found guilty both by evidence and by their own testimonies of admission they were rounded up and throw into pits of fire where the Europeans smashed their heads in while they attempted to climb out of the flames, the evidence for what I've told you is so much that if you look into the matter you will understand that claims about rodents or whatever nonsense being the cause is blown of out of the water when the evidence is weighed, call me whatever you may like but the truth must be told weather you wish to slap a label on it because the truth is disagreeable it is an indispensable fact of history that people try their damndest to cover up for political correctness sake

Haven't had one since I was 25, uterus removed. I had four children and feel I did my share of the population explosion. and I still feel like a woman. I was blessed until my oldest son firstborn was murdered at 27 in 2002. I feel like it was meant to happen because at 10 he told me that he would never see 30. blows me away when I stop and think about it. I'm ok with it, he is where he is meant to be and now he and my husband are together in heaven. it's what I need to hold on to get by

Urine is a pretty great way to clean things. We still use ammonia to this day. And the fleas infected with the plague also got sick; they couldn't feed, and so starving, desperate, they bit anything, leaving their host animals and attempting to feed on people. Ironic, as I'm theorizing that less healthy animal fleas bit humans than infected animal fleas.

I've read several books on the history of the plague, and some priests also thought that drinking menstruation blood would cure/ward off the plague. I kind of just think that the whole situation was so devastating that they were willing to try anything. But yeah, they did a LOT of gross things thinking it would ward off the plague.

There aren't 2 more opposite concepts or words I could possibly come up with than Hygiene and Plague. I'm quite sure that hygiene came in somewhere near the bottom of the list for it to begin with and just maybe the likelihood of your probable and imminent demise were a bit more in the forefront of people's concerns.

I love watching these and I understand the difficulty of narration at this speed but sometimes just sometimes. the pronunciation of words is a bit. off. The picture of a lime fruit when talking about quicklime is also hilarious. Limes have nothing to do with quicklime hahahahaha

I frequently think about some of the worst times I've been sick, my surgeries, and my difficulties during my first labour, and I am convinced that if I didn't live in the modern age, I would've been long dead by now. How lucky I am to be alive.

Question? Where are those whose family come from these times, come up with the concept that bathing less is better? When it's proof HERE that keeping CLEAN is best.
A certain few of you are just disgusting and you know who I speak of.

Making lye soap isn't that hard. I would have been bathing upstream in a creek with soap that I made myself. I would definitely choose a very low populated area to live and bathe in because people use to dump potty pots in those creeks.

I wish I lived back then. It would feel amazing for my immaculate hygiene to finally get some recognition. I constantly have to put up with my mum telling me Son, you're a failure and Son, stop rubbing shit and piss all over yourself

I lived in Europe in 2010 and 2011, I found personal hygiene to be questionable in general. People smelled pretty bad on a daily basis so I can believe how bad it was centuries ago when they still seem to have little care for it.

Some idiots think they can get away with being dirty these days and in indoor crowded places and have no repercussions. This poor judgement is natural selection. This is why lm clean don't take any risks.
reply

Dude, this is gross. Showering one time a day and changing your clothes is not enough. If you work hard in filthy places and sweat. The bare minimum should be two showers a day with a change of clothes.
reply

Quick lye isn't made of limes doesn't have anything to do with a lime but thank you SO MUCH for that laugh. Truly. I guess showing a pile of white powder would have been. Meh, you could have gone there.

Is there a movie or series that showcases the filth of medieval times or do they all just pretend it was pristine, immaculate stone castles with perfectly clean clothes and no shit all over the floor?
reply

I wouldn't have made it. from the first foul odor I would've cut off my nose and bled to death or ran into the forest to live a solitary life away from all those nasty people and horrid smells.
reply

Why do everyone end up blaming the Jews for everything? or at least it seems to be that way. The Jews are minding their own business then something goes wrong and everyone is like It's the Jews!

1: 59 the notorious bird-like costume worn by a limited number of doctors dated from the 1720s. It's an iconic image though, so i can see why it's associated across the board with all plagues.
reply

And now, there's no possible way it would be named Black Plague.
It would be Non-White Plague or Plague of Color.
Don't get me started on the insanely hilarious irony of Monkeypox.
