I enjoyed this 11 minute whirlwind tour through history but I hardly believe that the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock rather than their chartered destination of Virginia because they ran out of beer. They took on fresh water in the area immediately, and then sailed around for 5 days looking for a place to land - but they were only a 5 days sail north of Virginia as it was! To note, if beer was the issue, Virginia already had breweries set up and it was readily available for purchase, which was entirely not the case at Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower spent far too long there and would have been able to return to England loaded with fresh beer almost immediately if they'd simply continued to Virginia. This is all laid out in a book called Mayflower: Voyage, Community, War by Nathaniel Philbrick.

The problem I have with the statement about boiling water to make beer making it safe to drink is it has to ferment first before there is alcohol. And I doubt they had fermenters with airlocks like I use for home brewing. It was probably fermented in an open container, which could have allowed other bacteria to get into the beer. Keep in mind the process of making vinegar is simply leaving alcohol out and the vinegar bacteria commonly present in the air just like yeast breaks down the alcohol into vinegar and forms a vinegar mother.

So one of the funny things that sorta didn't get a lot of attention in this video: apparently a TON of industrialization and scientific breakthroughs in Germany kinda just came as a biproduct of scaling up brewing methods. Case in point, a ton of advances in refrigeration came about more or less because people wanted to make more lagers year round.

I love beer. On a hot day nothing refreshes me more than pounding down a cold beer then sipping the second in a frosted glass. I make my own beer, not from a kit. I mill the grain and make some fine beer. It is cheaper to serve guests than coffee.

It surprised me when I learned that some (most? maybe) of our election-terminology comes from club-lingo (. none of the words come to mind right now, except that maybe they're a part of party politics)
