Psychiatric PRACTICES are in the dark ages presently. Dr's Guess, and guinea pig patients on medicines. Lord if they took a scan of the brain it may help a lot seeing as all other specialties get MRIs and Cat Scans to treat patients. Psychiatry is a joke and needs to look into the body as a whole organism and not just the brain. The microbiome is very much connected to the brain including medical states such as anxiety, panic, and depression in patients. And there still is biased based and disrespectful treatment.

#weirdhistory I'm pretty sure I was one of the last patients to receive a gallium scan they pulled a tooth and made me drink this awful liquid 24 hrs beforehand. I'd like you to cover a story about the history of this scan and the reason for it. I believe it was the go tobefore the MRI was invented? All I remember is I had to lay naked on a cold metal table whilst this ufo looking machine pressed closely to my body and I'm not sure how much it'd helped as far as diagnosis?

It really annoys me how electroshock therapy is ALWAYS given as an example of a terrible treatment. Is was over-prescribed and done poorly BUT it is still a treatment that is incredibly effective for catatonic patients in particular. I work in a pediatric psych hospital and have seen it literally bring a person back from being a vegetable. Its just called ETC now. Still makes you feel pretty terrible after a treatment though

It is actually still a good point to test a few diseaces before putting the patient into mental health ward. For example urinary track infection is a very common reason for elderly people's weird behavior. As the infection is cured, behavior comes back to normal too. (In fact I work in mental health field and sometimes you can see that the person is weird in a wrong way compared to his/her normal, and that might be caused by UTI too)

my great grandmother was put in a mental institution. it was the 60s so I assumed it wasnt quite the same as this but it makes me feel so grateful that I dont get treated like a criminal because of my neurodivergancy. I often (rightfully) complain about being treated poorly for being different but we have come a long way from treating people this way.

This kind of garbage carried on into the 1980s were mentally and physically disabled individuals were tortured and neglected in places like byberry and others and people were completely ignoring the problem in the 1900s well it went up until the 1980s and there were lots of places that are still questionable in 2023 but you don't care I know.

I've worked in state hospitals for years and some of the things described in the video are not that far from what still goes on in the institutions today. sadly. there are many things I can never erase from my memories. no matter how much I wish I could.

In the 70s, laws were passed that emptied the asylums. This meant that many of those released became homeless and weren't being cared for. We still have people on the streets today because no one is monitoring medications which would help them.

people in many institutions are mistreated still today because the workers can get away with it. Look at the Elderly in nursing homes. Its a shame that people with mental illness and prejudice are hired to care for the vulnerable.

Mental health hasnt improved so much! At least in the early 1900s there were institutions made for the people! NOW they are left homeless in the streets! Society has definitely failed the mentally ill! And its getting worse!

Back in the 60s my Aunt had the shock treatment, which made it even worse, everytime I saw her, she look like a zombie, she became a vegetable, and she lived 11 years like that until she died.

Hasn't changed as much as one might hope. Although mental healthcare is kinder and gentler now, when you're committed, you'll still get strip searched, bathed and numerous blood draws.

No worries, Governor Adams in New York wants to be able to institutionalize people
living on the street, for their own good.
Things really haven't changed much.

Meanwhile most of these patients were suffering from trauma due to abusive parenting practices and systemic beliefs and society STILL struggles to accept this.

I am glad that I was not born during that time, considering that I have numerous mental disorders, which include OCD, ADHD, Tic Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression.

We as a society are a lot more progressive and tolerant of the mentally ill these days than we were a hundred years ago. Just look at the man we elected President.

I don't think I'd want to be anywhere in the year 1900, let alone an insane asylum. Insane asylums they definitely were, but it was the treatment that was insane.

I do like the gardening they had. Although I'm a gardener so I might be partial. I have bipolar 1 & ADHD and gardening has been very therapeutic for me personally.
