Did The Iron Maiden Actually Exist?

What was the iron maiden, and how did the iron maiden work? The medieval torture device, a human-sized sarcophagus filled with spikes, seems almost too gruesome to be true. According to 19th-century scholars, the iron maiden caused a slow, painful end, as people bled from shallow wounds while their torturers opened and closed the contraption's doors to impale them. Sharp spikes lined up with the eyes, causing blinding pain. It might be featured in multiple torture museums, but did the iron maiden exist?

Legend has it that mid evil judges would say 2 Minutes To Midnight when sentencing a criminal to death using this method. This would cause the guilty party to Run To The Hills when hearing their fate. It was The Longest Day for someone sentenced to death by this method. In 1567 a father was The Trooper for taking his son's punishment to be executed by this method. It's early in the morning where I am so I'm a little tired thinking of these puns for a fake history lesson.

This legend of the Iron Maiden kind of reminds me of the rumors that were spread around to the French people before they stormed the Bastille in 1789. The revolutionaries thought the Bastille was full of prisoners being horribly mistreated, the very symbol of the abuses the French aristocracy was inflicting on the 3rd estate (peasants. It turns out there were 7 inmates at the time being decently well treated. The power of rumors.

I really want to see you do a video on bushido. There's a great book on the topic by Oleg Benesch. It's actually a really interesting history, and bushido was taken from some other older concepts and retroactively applied to samurai. Nitobe's book was the first mention of bushido as we know it today, and it's basically his fault that people believe this is the true way of the samurai.

With a special permission, you can take a gander at Uday Hussein's iron maiden at a military museum just outside DC along with Saddam's cigar box, and other weird possessions from tyranical rulers and equal crazies throughout the early 1800's. Many items were designed by slave traders, owners and inventors that just wanted to exceed their creativity.

Yeah I saw a late night movie on that;
So it must be true: ;
RIGHT,
I definitely could care less about that band with the same name;
I really believe that the sounds coming out of that group definitely tortured anyone who liked or listened to that swill;
It definitely makes me want to puke everywhere

If it were really used, it most likely would have caused a swift death (depending on the placement of the spikes. They are usually shown as having spikes all over -- meaning they would pierce the heart and/or lungs -- which would pretty much instantly kill anyone inside it.

That is really interesting! Thanks for the history lesson.
I believe to recall seeing an iron maiden in the Rothenburg ob der Tauber's torture museum back in the '60s when my father was stationed in Germany. Little did I know, it was just to scare me - which it did.

I have that book, Curious Punishments of Bygone Days, and it is full of interesting stories. Stocks, Pillories, whipping at the carts tail, wooden horse, and ducking. Also, a chapter on bilboes, yes that is with a b. These are essentially metal stocks. Good stuff

The Maiden looks like it wouldn't work as well on people of different size and height (how would it get all of them pricked deep enough to slowly die but not deep enough to die immidiately.
And nobody would build a complex machine to torture just 1 person.

People in the past: Yeah we used to bust people's backs open with an axe then remove their lungs so theyd still breathe.
Coffin with stabby things
People in the past: yeah no that's too gruesome we don't do that

What! You mean there are myths related to the cruelty of the Christian/Catholic religion? Imagine that. Makes you wonder what other myths the enlightened created.

Sorry I clicked on this video just to comment, of course Iron Maidens are real? Uday Hussein was torturing people with one as recently as the 1990s lol

My favorite Weird History narrator right here. Even when talking about grim topics, he still somehow makes it light hearted and not as grim
reply

So what youre telling me is that Enlightenment era Stephen King invented this thing and everyone just ran with it? Everything I know is a lie.
reply

Id listen to the narrator read the phone book. Anyone remember those? Think they still exist. Maybe that could be the next episode weird history?
reply

Imagine having your bones broken on the Catharine Wheel, then being stabbed by the Iron Maiden, THEN being locked in the Brazen Bull. Yeesh!
reply

Im sure it existed. Maybe it was just a threatening sight to scare people instead of putting people in it. Though Im sure it existed.

Hear me out: what if you had an iron maiden in your house, but you open it up and it's a wardrobe? Plenty of spikes to hang stuff on.
