Strangely Delicious Sounding Alcoholic Drinks From Ancient Societies

Today's alcoholic beverages range from canned Strawberritas to expertly crafted cocktails, but modern bartenders aren't the first people to invent adults-only drinks. In fact, there are plenty of types of weird ancient liquors that have survived in the historical and archaeological records. These ancient alcohols don't always sound appetizing, but they're definitely fascinating

Ah yes, when it just won't do to have cheese with wine why not add it to it. And for some extra flair why not add some barley.
If regular Kykeon isn't good enough for your next festival, why not make some with slightly rotten barley. Be warned you may experience hallucinations caused by ergot poisoning, don't worry though if you don't experience hallucinations then you could/ will have delusions that a relative/ friend or neighbour is cursed by a god (aka a witch, whoops wrong time period)

Hello Weird History,
If you make hygiene videos again, you can then make videos about hygiene in the byzantine empire, Eastern Europe has already differed greatly from Western Europe.
Also hygiene in Frankish Empire, where Charlemagne, crowned by the Pope, bathed daily with his friends. Apparently the very Catholic aristocracy in the 8/9 century was cleaner than the French or British noble family in the 18/19 century.
Would be very interesting

Max Miller (of Tasting History with Max Miller) has made posca, kykeon, and conditum paradoxum. If you want the recipes for those and a bunch of other ancient beverages (and foods, pop over and check him out. He also has recipes for Montezuma's Chocolate, Tudor buttered beer, mead, and Smoking Bishop.

I think I will take some cow chips and mix with poison ivy and let them ferment together. Add some organic brown sugar, molded wheat and some wild mushrooms. If I survive, then I will sell it. By the way, I wonder who it was that used to gather wild mushrooms to eat to see if they were safe.

Ancient and later people drank alcoholic beverages because milk, fruit juices and water were tainted. The modern world drinks it, because their use of it, gave us a permanent taste for it, added to that the sugar trade lead to fizzy drinks, which we also have an unnecessary taste for.

Maybe Cato and Hadrian just liked the taste of Posca? I dont care for wine or champagne, but I do enjoy a icy cold beer once in a while. Especially on a Australian 100+ degree day! My wife likes wine, but doesnt like beer at all. She likes Jack and coke too.

If you ever come to Mexico and are interested in trying pulque, let me help you save some time: don't. It tastes so bad. It literally tastes like rotten stuff, it's viscous and if it isn't properly stored, it can even make you sick from a GI infection.

You should do a whole video devoted to Absinthe. I tried it once for my birthday and the next day I told my co-workers that afterwards it felt like there was an enormous weight pressing on my head. Apparently that's what being drunk feels like.

I always wanted to try Creme Yvette( candied violet liquor) simply because its a pretty purple color.
Had a terrible reaction to a mudslide. Could it be because Kaluha is made from coffee and im sensitice to caffeine?

I was sipping a pinot grigio wine while watching this! BTW - I'm fond of Tokaji (Tokay, which one of the wines in this video reminded me of. It's expensive, so I served it only on two special occasions in my life.

I think this episode deserves a series around the world. This is all only from the Italian and the Egyptian regions. Nothing from the Americas, Africas, Asias, Australia, New Zealand and much much more.

Human history and alcohol basically go hand in hand, I also find it funny that alcohol is older than pretty much every religion yet most of them consider it a no, no lmao

I work for a Winery in walla walla Washington and were in our slow season right now so weve been watching a lot of your videos. Would love to see one about the history of wine!

The one who drinks alcohol will be made to taste the liquid remains of burned people in hell. (Authentic report from the last Prophet of One God of All things)

NEVER thought Id see Pulque get mentioned in one of these videos. Damn. You actually chose mariachi Mexican music too! Instead of some random salsa track.

Kykeon definitely sounds like the most fun, if it was derived from ergot it could have been a lot like dropping acid. dunno about the cheese though.
