In 1859, Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed the man sleeping with his wife. After escaping a prison sentence, Sickles disobeyed orders in the Civil War and lost a leg. After the war, General Dan Sickles donated the leg to the Army Medical Museum. And that's just the start when it comes to the wildest general in the Civil War

Sickles was a character when that was considered a virtue in a public figure. One thing I am sure of, his strange move upset not only his superiors but Longstreet and Lee as well. He wasn't supposed to be there! In a strange way, the time it took to stick his unfortunate troops in the Confederate meat grinder may have been useful. Not as useful as staying where he was ordered but after reading Longstreet At Gettysburg: A Critical Reassessment by Cory M. Pfarr I am inclined to believe he rendered good service by being himself. Strange that his lack of knowledge in things military led to such a posting, let alone avoiding a court-martial he really deserved. As for the advantages of being a political leader, who else could have murdered a man, plead insanity to avoid punishment, then be awarded a military posting allowing the slaughter of not only your own troops but those hastily sent to support your blunder, and still get an MoH. Makes our current crop of leaders seem amateurish! They could use some lessons from Sickles in avarice and venality.

The South should have won the war against northern aggression- interesting to see the character of those in leadership positions who perpetrated crimes against the Southern states

Greetings from Finland, so a guy who just shoots a man i mean a murderer. when you give that at the start and at the end ask if he's a hero, that's most not definetly it
reply

I'm going to cheat on my husband not with the mailman or the gardener, but with the son of the man who wrote the National Anthem to our country.

Speaking of Central Park can you talk about how it used to be an African American settlement until it was declared eminent domain to create to create Central Park
reply

I would say W. T. Sherman, he was an absolute psychopath and pyromaniac who burned down and destroyed almost everything in his path on the southern coast
reply

Just so you know, in order to build Central Park, they had to displace entire neighborhoods of Black and Immigrant families. Look up Seneca Village.

What about the first union general to die in battle at Wilsons Creek? Nathaniel Lyon his efforts stopped Missouri from joining the confederacy.

Today I learned that the government has always been corrupt and that government corruption is not a modern problem but an ancient one.

How about the military officer that caused the Steamboat Sultana disaster by getting paid per person and sending 2 other boats away.

There is no tragedy in slaying the adulterer unless they are a member of congress and then we go blind and see nothing of the sort

And Sickles pulled a similar move at Chancellorsville. His Ill advised adavance exposed the 11th Corps to Jackson who routed them

Anybody who puts a few leads into francis scott key's son and rids the world of such specimen is a hero in my book.

He was a typical dirt bag DC politician!
He would've fit in real good with the Clinton's and MOST of the others!

Sounds like a fascinatingly horrible human being, who continually failed upwards and was all about self-promotion and glory.
