Czar Peter the Great of Russia casts a long shadow over history. A giant of a man, with appetites for learning and adventure to match, he did more to modernize his country than pretty much any other ruler before or since. But who was Peter the Great as a man, a father, and a reformer?

One thing I heard about Peter the Great was his military education. He started as a boy playing war games, but his games involved real weapons and in the beginning he started out as a drummer boy, however, as he learned how to use weapons he promoted himself. These games were not just kids playing soldier. He took these games very seriously and in some instances people got killed in them. These war games would prepare him for fighting against Sweden years later against the Swedish King Charles who was also a proficient soldier. Missed here was how Peter died. He dove in some freezing water to save a soldier and the exposure killed him.

part of the issue for the old believers was that the reforms were brought in in the year 1666. -six six six. more importantly hold up three fingers for a blessing as opposed to two- it is uncomfortable now imagine how it woudl feel if you were a malnourished peasant,

Peter the Great provides a stark contrast with the majority of Romanov tsars, who tended to focus on expanding their realm south and east while not fundamentally changing a country that struck many people of the time as two or three centuries behind the times.

Tsar Peter learned how to build warships from the Dutch.
We are sorry and apologise to the world that we learned him anything.
But looking at the performance of the Moskva submarine, his great great grandsons fortunately didn't get much from it.

Peter the great was not nearly nearly 7' tall he was 6' 8 that's a whole 4 another inches before you hit 7' that's almost half a foot why didn't you say he was over 6 and a 1/2 feet tall that would be less of a lie than what you said

Interesting to hear this. St. Petersburg was the birthplace and home of my late husband who, when he was born, the city was called Leningrad. He and his family were finally able to leave when he was 17 years old.

Wow! Imagine being the first leader of a country with such a long history to leave the country. I guess it explains the isolationist impulses that still seem to be entrenched in some elements of the society.

So his only redeeming qualities were that he was tall, jacked, and helped out the ship builders despite being emperor. The cultural modernist reforms were disappointing. Beard gang

ehh, I heard once that Catherine the Great had intercourses with horses (horses for courses) and that she even possibly died under a stallion. Is there an element of truth in it?

I'd love it if you'd post another almost identical video without the big assed jokes about big assed Peter, so I can send this video to 2-5th graders

This video came at just the right time lol. I am currently reading a fictional account of Peters second wife Catherines life. Very interesting

Ivan was older than Peter, and Peter had two surviving daughters, Anna and Elizabeth, with the son of Anna becoming the heir to Elizabeth. .

Would you consider doing an episode about Barba Rossa, who was a mercenary soldier in the 1500s and worked with Turkish invaders?

Between Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great and Nicholas the II, being the son of a Czar was going to get you killed.

Peter's coming to town for an official visit. I hope he likes my beard. Cross your fingers, eh? No! Not like that!
reply

Peter wasn't physically enormous
He had gigantism
He would have been a sideshow freak instead of a czar
