Knew some of this, but as it was a secondary school book the story was watered down.
Mum saw her child acting out grown up scenarios of work and parenthood with her toys, and came up with the idea of creating an adult looking doll. Doll was named Barbie after said daughter.
(Summary of reading text)
Not a mention that it was a copy pf another product, but guess in seconds school this origin would lead to too many questions and explanations so story was simplified.
What gets me is that for the past decade or more you don't own just one Barbiebut with every job scenario, film or TV series you have to buy a new doll for the clothes and accessories, whereas in the past you purchased one doll and then accessory packs.
But that is business and how they make money.
Fortunately, although my daughter had some Barbies (usually purchased by her dad as a guilt present for not doing much) she was happy for me to buy the cheaper copy versions.
Ps, she also got dad to buy many of the Monster High dolls, and now thinking of selling some of them as they apparently sell second hand for quite a lot if they are in good condition (which some are.

In the UK, we had the rather more conservative, and less well endowed Sindy, she too eventually gained a boyfriend, Paul, and had a variety of extra outfits, that you could sew, knit, or, eventually buy. She wore sensible, sometimes elegant clothes, had normal dimensions, and sensible dimensions. Barbie did finally arrive, I had one, once, but much preferred my Pippas, which were smaller, prettier little ladies, with brushable, beautiful hair, loads of friends, the first adult black doll I ever owned, and all the normal jobs, cars, salons, Veterinary licence, pilots licence, police officer erm licence, etc.
And try finding one of HER shoes, lol x

I remember desperately wanting a Barbie doll because I imagined dressing her up and maybe making clothes for her with those clothes-making kits that you can buy for Barbies. When I had it, I don't remember actually playing with it because my parents bought my brother a SNES and that proved to be infinitely more enjoyable (it was still relatively new at the time. After the SNES, I got hooked on pc games and eventually discovered the internet and all its early uncensored and unadultered glory seeing things no 10 year old should ever have to see. Come to think of it, I think kids in my generation lost our childhood too soon because of that.

I'm so glad you covered the truth about Barbie. It is really sad that they ripped off Lily so completely and basically got away with it. I grew up in the beginning of the Barbie era. There were fashion dolls before Barbie. For example, The Revlon doll came out it 1956, three years before Barbie, and she was a real beauty. I had Revlon dolls were what I had. I asked my mother for a Barbie, and she said, Why would I spend my money on such an ugly doll? Barbie was ugly, but she had better advertisers.

I never liked Barbie growing up. I wasn't one of those girls that conformed to liking girls shit. Barbie was always pretty whorish to me. Also how did this woman have so many jobs without a job interview. That's problematic for a person to have so many jobs. I remember when pregnant Barbie came out and it caused an outrage because there wasn't a ring on her finger. I was surprised by the level of care people had in such a small detail. I never got one btw.

I saw, some years ago, a film about a woman who had spent years starving herself, piling on makeup, and getting multiple, seemingly endless plastic surgeries, implants, and more, in order to make herself the perfect, living image of a Barbie doll. It was an unsettling, sad thing to see. And very unhealthy. That girl was quite ill.

Actually Lilli just became a girl's toy after the success of Barbie in US, before that she didn't had furniture or anything like this and barbie was at first a disaster between man in Mattel and the buyers from toy stores, women of course understood the idea but man refused to get a doll with breast

Catching up on my back log of Weird History uploads. You'd expect the content to dip, or lull in information, or miss a mark in production value, but nope. Every time. Every binge. Also love the concept of LIly for that time period. Even back then everyone lowkey respected the baddies.

I think my mom might have one of those Lily dolls. either that or is a very early barbie. My parents lived in germany in the early 70's and some dude that had the hots for my mom gave her a doll. I always thought it was a barbie but my mom always said it was not. This explains a lot.

Nothing like the original Lilly/ Barbie. So many changes have been made but hearing the history of Barbie its almost like listening to it all over again how #McDonalds cheated out the McDonalds family out of billions #Swindling101

Considering the Bild tabloid has always catered to the lowest common denominator and created the breeding ground for the far-right AfD party (imagine a party full of certain idiots with red baseball caps, screw them!

Same thing happened to the Cabbage Patch dolls. Someone created the doll, but couldn't get the patent on time. Then someone else took the idea and got the patent. Very few changes were made. There was even a lawsuit.

Barbie needs to have a tiny waist. The clothes are still made of regular fabric, and at that scale the material alone adds a lot of bulk. If she had realistic proportions, the clothes would make her look too big.

Back in the 80s, my grandma worked for Ruth Handler, the lady who created Barbie. Apparently, she was very mean to my grandma. Ruth did some shady stuff, like copying Barbies image from another doll.

I think the whole impossible body thing had more to do with the silhouette of the Barbie figure! The late 50s was big on the hourglass shape and it was a more rare thing to have naturally. Great video!

Lilli's creators should have demanded a piece of the pie, like 10% of all sales. That would be the gift that keeps on giving. If Mattel were ethical they would offer something.

The Doll War between Germany and the US continued into the 60s when a German toy manufacturer created the Petra doll and were then sued by Mattel for ripping off Barbie!

I see this like Ray Kroc and the founders of McDonalds. Sure they had the idea but nobody would be talking about it in 2022 without him taking over. Same thing with the dolls.
