I mean him being convinced that his grandson was orchestrating it makes it a bit more understandable to not wanting to pay. And it would also explain why he would be stricken from the will. Still quite harsh and tragic. I mean he was only 15. It's a real bad thing but i'd imagine you'd support family even through things like this. If I were the grandfather, Id have paid secretely, then have punished him for orchestrating it and subsequently creating a dangerous situation for all his other family members. Still the most I'd have done would've been being a bit short with him. Still would've given all the support. Would not strike from will. But he also let his 12 y old son die so that was obviously not smth he was empathetic enough to get over. What a prick

A bloody awful, terrible moment in time.
I was just 5, when it happened, but grew up fascinated by the whole horrific kidnapping, the pure EVIL of that family.
As a child of a loving, giving family, it was completely unfathomable to me, and like many people of that era, fell a little in love with the brave, artistic, hippy, with the beautiful hair, looks, and style.
Of course he should have paid the ransom, a mere drop in the ocean of that man's fortune, that would have saved his Grandson's life, health and happiness.

My aunt worked as a draftsman for Getty Oil and I remember her talking about this at the dinner table, but didn't pay much attention since I was in junior high. I do remember her being either the only or one of only a couple of women at her level, and that the company was extremely stingy with their workers as well -- and the women made less than the men doing the exact same job. My dad had four amazing sisters, so I grew up with a great education in the feminist movement back then!

He said in his autobiography that he refused to pay the ransom because:
(1) if he had paid the money, he would place his children, as well as his grandchildren, in danger for a potential kidnappings
(2) he thought the chances were best for the his grandson's release if he did not pay
(3) it would also lessen the risk of other family members being kidnapped had he not paid. He did pay when his grandson's ear was cut off.

J Paul Getty was a horrible person. His initial refusal to pay the ransom because he didn't want to encourage other kidnappings makes sense and might be excusable. However, negotiating the ransom to an amount that he could write the bulk off of as a tax deduction, then not only requiring his son to pay him back the remainder, but charging him interest on top of that, are the acts of a selfish, cold-hearted monster.

Your 19 year old daughter wants to go to Mexico alone. You plead with her that it's complete insanity but she insists that she has to get out and live her life without being scared and you can't overprotect her forever, and besides the odds of something bad happening are so slim. Then she calls, she's been nabbed by cartels of course. Do you pay or tell her to work it off?

The grandfather sounds like a real-life Ebenezer Scrooge who never got his visit from the three Christmas ghosts. What an absolute asshole. And Paul's story after the kidnapping, of getting into substance abuse when he obviously needed professional mental health help and dying so young, is so sad. I hope he's found peace, wherever he is now.

Heartless or not, his reasoning for not wanting to pay is an actual good one. Just imagine if he did pay the 17mil and then some other idiot kidnaps another member of his family in order to get a quick payday. Next thing you know, the Getty's are now marks for easy money because they have a rich patriarch who'll pay whatever you demand.

The Evil Within hhuu
. huu How can I trick myself
Cue the Methbreak!
Then he dies before the movie is finished giving it a weird high budget yet completely outsider art style so bad and also good except the original title The Evil Within is much better but get it confused with the game

Poor Paul. I don't believe it was set up by him, he would already have known how much of a horrible person his grandfather was. It's very heartbreaking to learn he had to live out his last years paralyzed. I think things would have gone differently if his grandfather paid right away.

There is no guarantee that he would have been alive if they gave $17 million, they might even have motivation to kill the victim after they get the money.
That is an interesting kidnapping, and a disturbing downfall for John Paul Getty III.
Thank you for the video.

What a lovely person Getty sr. was, and well loved as well, which his numerous marriages will attest to. Good thing these individuals arent able to buy immortality. Should there be such a location dubbed Hell, hell hopefully be quite crispy by now.

getty images' business model is based on monopoly and monopolization of what was already available for free or at low cost. A company built by a rich kid who didn't know what to do with his money. Symptom of bottomless greed mentality

Christ, I hope that man is burning in hell. Money cannot replace a life. Now I'm kind of glad I'm broke, because I really would spend my last penny to save my child. (I'm not old enough to have a grandchild yet lol) 300th!

He probably sacrificed his children and grandchildren and countless other children in one way or another for increased fortune and power, just like all his cronies did, their fathers before them and their heirs still do.

What do I think? Jean Paul Getty Senior was a walking talking botched abortion who would have done more good in the world if as an infant he shoved a butter knife in a light socket. Allegedly.

I remember the news of the kidnapping. It was announced on my birthday. When we heard that his grandfather refused to pay the ransom and then they cut off his ear, brutal and cold blooded.

I wouldn't have paid the ransom either. Instead I would've hired a few goons to recover the kid and make an example of the kidnappers if you catch my meaning.

Talk about missing the entire point of being rich! If you wont protect even your own family what's the point of the wealth? Just to hoard it for greeds sake.
