Think a teenager can't build a nuclear breeder reactor without getting caught? Think again. David Hahn, aka the Radioactive Boy Scout, was able to easily collect radioactive and highly dangerous materials to experiment with nuclear energy. Just when you think the story can't get crazier, it does

Bruh Im so mad at this guy radiation has gotta be one of the worst things to happen to you and he exposed it to 40000 people, all of whom will probably get cancer and die a painful death. Before you start saying it was his parents fault not his a teenager should be able to know the danger, Im the same age as him as I type this. Yes the parents should have stopped him early on but they are not the main problem HE is. I dont do any chemistry outside of my class and I know how dangerous radioactivity is, so someone like him who read chemistry books on his own should know.

He keeps blowing everything up then goes back and does it again. He never gives up! I'm amazed that his parent's did anything! Most parent's would question things!
Sad that he died so young and that they don't have programs in America for kids like David. I remember I did an enrichment program in the 1970s in my kid years. You could choose Drama, Art, or Sports. But I think they should have had science who knows what geniuses are out there? They should bring summer programs like that back but add science.

A 100 times normal levels of radiation, omg that must be pretty serious. that's 16 micro Sieverts, background is 0. 16 micro Sieverts per hour. One airplane flight gives 3 micro Sieverts per hour, and you don't see pilots dropping dead who spent a long time in those radiation levels. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS levels of radiation, tell us how much. only thing mentioned is they measured 100 times normal levels at the source, which I take as 100x background levels. Peanuts

David Hahn is who makes me believe in humanity again, a real human being! Ignoring safety - yes, but only 17 and already sorting out the laws of physics. I was to a much lesser extent like him. When I had asked for Sulphur at 17 in a local shop, wanting to vulcanize rubber, the seller said: What a strange young man. :D. David Hahn and Nicola Tesla are the people that make me think humanity doesn't yet deserve to disappear.

Great kid, potential prodigy, though due to lack of proper supervision or parenting, or REAL SUPPORT( letting your kid do whatever is not supportive, helping your kid get proper education and safety is supportive) his work ethic was obvious above what any kid of 2022 will EVER have. Imagine all the possible geniuses and world changers there could be if they had proper parenting/support

Informative but too much why didn't anyone stop him? pearl clutching. Easy in hindsight to say people should have stopped him but history is rife with armchair quarterback situations.
Secondly, it's a damn good thing the feds don't have rights to just jump into private property at their will. Might have been useful in this situation but also would be abused out the ass.

I see him as more cunning that science genius He was determined and very very Ballsy and clever. His lack of safety precautions and actual knowledge point more towards the worlds most determined curious and driven boy No doubt extremely smart and a genius on that level but not so much a science genius. More of a Frank Abignale than a Sheldon Cooper

This seems like the time when any parent would take away the chemistry kit. Yeah, any shitty parent, 'cause to me it sounds like time to take your kid to a school for gifted individuals where he could learn and grow safely.
Also, how is him earning a badge for his chemistry skill a red flag?
Dear narrator, you are a simpleton.

Near to me there is a site of an old chemical company that was shut down. The clean up took years and several feet of earth was removed and then new dirt was brought in and piled up nearly 20' over the site. About a decade later the town decided it would be a great place to build their new soccer fields.

On September 27, 2016, at the age of 39, Hahn died in his hometown of Shelby Charter Township, Michigan. His death was ruled an accidental result of intoxication from the combined effects of alcohol, diphenhydramine, and fentanyl.
It's sad what happened to him. Was def a genius without guidance.

This was all well before the kneejerk security increase after 9/11. Anyone trying a David Hahn stunt today would most certainly have the Feds and other government bodies at their door asking question, probably with guns pointing st the person, and a search warrant thrown in for good measure.

5: 19 thats not 100% true, some heavy water reactors such as the CANDU or graphite-moderated reactors such as the magnox breed fuel that they use to produce energy from isotopes such as natural uranium, plutonium, or thorium from mines and manage to be some of the safest reactors out there

I was building miniature solid rocket boosters when i was 14, one exploded right infront of me and i had to go to the hospital with 57 different wounds on my face and my right hand, thats where i stopped, even now, 6 years later i still have scars

This guy is not a genius fellars, should know better. not a safe reactor and not safe w the radiation it was putting out. If he was a genius he would have had protocals in place to make sure the radiation didnt get out of, hand.

Thank u for making the point im always saying. I say layzeenes and greed and misunderstandings are a big problem in society. Though accountability is a real issue. Ppl need to be held accountable for not doing their diligence.

I'm gonna try and go one better than him and build a nuclear bomb. So far I think the yield of my design is around the same as Hiroshima but I wanna get it as powerful as the MinuteMan. Wish me luck guys!

The business world (corporations) hate government regulations because it interferes with their profits. That's normal capitalist logic. They fight and water down any type of government regulations.

It's a shame that he didn't attempt to share his discoveries or work on his projects with actual professionals instead of hiding them and making things worse for the public and himself.

Let me get this straight, the US convinced us all that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, while this kid was building a freaking nuclear reactor in his moms potting shed in Michigan.
reply

A radioactive experiment in his back room is dangerous he must've been balmy. building a nuclear reactor in his backyard is like having a volcano in your neighborhood
