The Fascinating True Story That Inspired 'Peaky Blinders'

Who were the real Peaky Blinders? On the BBC show, boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) violently dominates the streets of Birmingham, England, while wearing tailored, fashionable clothes. And in reality, the gang members did wear a signature dressy look, complete with silk scarves, to class up their extralegal enterprise. But they also sewed razor blades in their caps to injure the faces of their rivals and victims, causing a crime wave that infuriated the police. The Peaky Blinders were one of many groups in Birmingham that resorted to their enterprises because of the city's industrialized poverty, but their tactics made them the most feared gang in all of Britain

Is there going to be spoilers in this? I'm only on season 5. 4? I have a feeling that one of the brothers dies because when I searched if there was going to be a season 5 or if the show was still recording, I only seen cillian's name, I think it is, and Arthur's actors name I think. Either that or Michael's actor. I also fell asleep and let it play for a couple of episodes and when I wake up, I forgot that it was peaky blinders that I had fallen asleep to and unfortunately found out about a wife's untimely death before I should have. I was very angry about that because I knew the episode before that meant I was going to have to watch one of my favorite characters die. So from now on if I can help it I will add a 10 secrets you didn't know or the real. Video to my watch later and just watch it once I finished the show. That's a long winded explanation for a simple question. I guess I'll hold off on watching this until someone answers or, more likely, finish the series first

Those really dark streets were shot in Liverpool L8, on what are affectionately called The Welsh Streets, as all of the street names are Welsh. Beatles drummer Ringo Starr was born at 9 Madryn Street there. His grandparents also lived on that street. When I went there in 2013, street after street was boarded up and black looking, (scary) unlike the friendly days of yesteryear. The streets have since been refurbished, but I've been told by a Liverpudlian that at least one street was left blacked out for this show. Perhaps Wiki The Welsh Streets L8

The combination of an expensive tailored suit worn with a working-class cloth cap would have been very distinctive at the time.
Back then your clothes really said a lot about your social class, and your social class mattered a lot more than it does now. Working men wore a cloth cap with cheap and practical clothes, while the better off wore proper hats with tailored suits. Mixing cloth caps with tailored suits would have looked bizarre, especially when combined with the working-class accents these men would have spoken with.

BY ORDERS OF F. N PEAKY BLINDERS! TNX! BTW. I am 52 years old from Zagreb, CROATIA, when I was 15 or so, we use to put razor blades in our hoodies at football matches so if coops or other team supporters tried to catch us, they will cut their hands. TRUTH 100! As a war vet must say that I LOVE this show, but it is more about PTSD than gangs. I REMEMBER EVERYTHING and FORGET NOTHING! - by T. Shellby quote I use all time.

What is funny how serious this guy takes the veracity of news papers info because newspapers never lie and misinformed. (They can publish something and then retract) How can we be for sure which one is the truth? Its called triangulation of information when 3 or more sources of information agree on certain details.
reply

Stop spreading mis information. they weren't called perky blinders because of razor blades in there hats they were called that because they would tip there hat to one side to hide one of there eyes. look at the BBC 7 minute documentary and the descendant of one of the perky blinders confirms it.

I have an idea for 5 episodes!
1. The Gonzalez sisters
2. The kray twins, (you may have done this one already)
3. Fred and Rose West
4. The Harpe brothers
5. The bloody benders
Hope one or all makes the cut, thanks!

My ancestors (I think great or great-great grandparents) left Birmingham because of Peaky Blinders activity. Apparently if you walked too close to the buildings, you were likely to get stabbed from an alley.

Someone recommended Peaky Blinders to us, and I'm so thankful they did! What a great show! Now when I'm suffering from Insomnia I have a show I can put on that has me sleeping like a baby within fifteen minutes.

Calling what Alex Jones is selling news is a stretch; Don Lemon or Tucker Carlson probably would have been more apropos. Hell, good old Brian I was taking fire in a helicopter Williams anyone?
reply

A well placed headbutt to the bridge of a nose is plenty. The blades would make me wanna be more careful so i didn't cut myself. Also seems inconvenient when taking your hat off and on
reply

I think the razor blade story could be true, football hooligans used them in their fights, they put matches in between 2 razor blades, making the cut virtually impossible to stitch.

Stick with the facts and ditch the cheeseball jokes. I enjoyed this video because im a fan of the BBC show but i almost stopped this video at least 6x due to your lame ass jokes.

I believe Chinn had a relative who was part of the Blinders as a boy, so that that's one big mark in his favor when it comes to theories and history about the gang, I think.
reply

Kids had really hard lives back then. It doesn't surprise me they would do anything to survive. Children being recruited by gangs still happens unfortunately.

season six is almost unwatchable. What is up with Netflix 's trend of dimly lit shows. You can't even see the actors. I get it's ARTY, but still annoying.

It amazed me how intellectuals think that criminals are dumb or couldn't afford things. Well they didn't buy them they were criminals so you steal them.
reply

To be fair, bbc never put based on true events or based on true story on Peaky Blinders' covers so they are free to change history however they wish
reply

It's historically improbable that the original 1800s peaky blinders had razor blades sewn into their caps peak (edited from impossible to improbable)
reply

Another interesting fact is Billy Kimber (the antagonist in the first season of peaky blinders) was actually a peaky blinder in real life.
