I've had questions about the lobotomy for years. And, before this video, my questions went unanswered. Now with this video, and Howard Duffy's story, almost all my questions are answered. Except for two. With the public, and doctors knowing how dangerous the transorbital lobotomy was, why was it continued for so long?
And my 2nd question: I know that Thorizine's creation is what caused it to fall out of style, but, when Dr. Nutjob found out about Thorizine, he refused to acknowledge the medication, and how it was able to control the mental illnesses, what caused the public to turn its back on the procedure, and helping to make sure it became a thing of the past?

I would call it pioneering from the beginning, considering where medicine was at the time this was an incredibly revolutionary proceedure and not unbased it legitimate medical science, however it got to his head (pun intended) and despite even further advancement past his own in the field of curing mental illnesses he stuck to his guns because he couldnt come off the high of being a leading revolutionary of medical practice

A form of lobotomy is still performed today. Doctors, in part, just rebranded the disgraced term to psychosurgery, and dressed up the operation to make it appear more scientific and professional.
Likewise, modern pharmaceuticals can essentially lobotomize patients sans the gruesome operation. Pills also have the bonus of requiring monthly prescription payments.

Freeman was a sadistic glory hunter, like one of the thousands of quacks from the 19th century. Didn't seem to faze him when his victims were permanently injured or died. he just went on to the next one, with nary a care. And he was practicing surgery without a license, again and again. why was he allowed to continue?

You hammer some nail through the eyes, without any hygiene standards and later you get a mentally retarded. Ok, maybe because the mentally retarded are so more likeable like some normal intelligent people? If it is so harmless, why the psychiatrists werent doing it for themselves?

It's so weird to hear how the man who actually came up with the idea of slicing the brain up actually wanted it to be some big last resort if all else fails move. I wouldn't be surprised if the original technique was much more careful then the new icepick style

I am PETRIFIED of lobotomies, based on the fact that it I had been born not too much earlier than I was, I likely would have been lobotomized due to my Tourettes syndrome. Which is an utterly horrifying thought.

I feel like he's basically just fencing/killing/stabbing the frontal lobe of the brain. So it will no longer work and make it easier cause they won't have those behaviour problems or something.

What do you mean there weren't better options at the time? Even getting addicted to opioids for a lifetime would be better than getting a lobotomy. It would surely calm many mental patients.

There is a compound, the Stockley Center Museum, located here in Georgetown, DE where Dr. Freeman practiced Labotomies. There they display this butchers horrific practices.

They were butchers. It is natural to get angry. These people ate mentally sick themselves and they no nothing about the colours of life and how to realise them.

Walter Freeman should have been imprisoned and/or hanged for his crimes against children. He convinced parents to lobotomize their kids for bad behavior

The lobotomy is absolutely sickening and I can't even finish the video. Its extremely depressing to know people just went along with it

The only difference between USA and nazi Germany and Japan is that American monsters were never judged like Mengele or unit 731.

I love how the music in the beginning sounds like the intro to a trap song. Did Freeman also drop a mixtape?
