i live nearby the house where Matahari used to live with her husband in Malang. the house is a military police headquarter now and other than the exterior painting, everything is still remain the same as more than 100 years ago when Matahari used to live there. the house is around 30 minutes to the Singosari temple from where she copied her dance move. and her costume probably inspired by the statue of Kendedes or Pradnya Paramitha as the accessories she used resembled the the statue the most. the dance movement she copied from the carvings on the outer wall of the temple. fun fact is, the statue was made to immortalise the first Queen of Singosari, Kendedes, who was said to be the most beautiful and smartest woman in that era. and legend said that when Kendedes' thigh got exposed when her skirt blown by the wind, men would go crazy over her as the thigh shone like a sun (there the name Matahari. but this is just my thought.

Mata Hari - seductress. looking at that pic at timestamp 0: 06 makes me wonder if that was the idea behind the OG Princess/Slave Leia. Probably not, but still, the costume idea is still there! Lol! But at the end, my mind was truly in the gutter when the narrator said that maybe the head of Mata Hari was back on the job! Lmao! I wouldn't do a double take at a store mannequin with a Futurama-esque head in a jar behind the customer-service desk. no, not at all. Lol! Be safe and healthy! Can't wait for the next entry into our Weird History! Peace & Long Life!

The English had captured a German cde book by then( German officers were told to destroy the code books if they were in danger of being captured but this officer disobeyed. He was captured and the British got his code book and knew exactly all the messages that Germans were sending. That's how they managed to decode the telegram that the Germans sent to Mexico to try to get Pancho Villa to keep the Americans busy. This brought the Americans into the war so they knew what messages the Germans were sending at this point.

The French prosecutors admitted they didn't have enough evidence to flog a cat. And I recalled from a documentary when she was asked about the amount given to her by the German in question she stated as a courtesan anything less would have been an insult or joke. In times of war things are going to get confused and exaggerated especially where spies are concerned. It's only natural that some kind of counter-intelligence is going to be tossed in here.

Please do an episode on Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a. k. a. Lieutenant Harry Buford. She was one of many women who fought in the US Civil War in male disguise in order to serve. Another one is Sarah Edmonds Seelye, a. k. a. Franklin Thompson, the only woman who received a veterans pension for her service in that war.

despite British and French beliefs, Germany isnt an idiot: she was pegged and if not for support from the Kaiser she would have been killed
they played her, exposing the French spies using her and letting them clamp down on leaks to the French. its brilliant, the Germanophobes didnt expect a double cross

There is an unfinished movie about Mata Hari directed by David Carradine, starring his daughter Calista. He also composed the soundtrack. Worked in it for years, didn't finished it.
There's a Netherlands website called Andere Tijden with scenes of it; the soundtrack demo was for sale on EBay.

Love this Mata Hari post. I would love to see you do one on Noor Inayat Khan who worked in the British resistance during WWII as a wireless operator assisting the French Resistance until her capture and execution by the Nazis in 1944. She was awarded both the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre

Not Mata Hari but an underworld operative feigning private photos taken for the eyes of Mata Hari's Soulmate only, as if they were public photos.
The sensationalized tabloid lie was manufactured by propaganda into the history, at the cost of reality and a much more interesting event.

Yeah thinking about it, how effective German military was and how incompetent the French army was, it is very peculiar that the Germans sent a message so unencrypted that the French managed to decode, she was definitely made an escape goat.

I would have liked to have her physical beauty if it didn't come with a nightmarish price. I lost the genetics lottery, only my hair and eyes are pretty. Red hair, hazel eyes that change color, and a body to make a balloon proud.

My first introduction was from the JRPG Shadow Hearts where she's not only blonde but has access to a satellite phone that lets her call in bombing runs to outright killsats in 1912. Its that kinda game.

Shes a legend here, she lived in a house close to mine in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Sadly, the house completely burned down a few years ago in a massive fire, taking a younger student's life with its flames

While Malay use the same term matahari for sun, in this particular context, she used the name Mata Hari based on the word in Bahasa Indonesia and not Malay. This is important in terms of historical accuracy

It seems like she had to go through so much. I just made a video about her and in my research it really just seemed like she got the short end of the stick throughout her life.

Wow, I don't know what I'd do. Keep the child with you, unable to feed it, or send it to your abusive ex-husband, who might be able to feed it? All options are terrible!

I was just reading the article about her daughter refuting she was a spy but just a courtesan. I feel bad for a daughter who was desperate to clear her mother's name.

So, war criminals walk free by the thousands, but a woman who was never proven to have caused any harm at all is executed, huh? Sounds like justice to me.
