The Roman Emperor Who May Have Invented The Whoopee Cushion

Emperor Elagabalus was the Roman emperor for a brief time from 218 to 222, but he packed a lot of scandal into those years. When it comes to the weirdest royals throughout history, Elagabalus might be the wildest of all. It's hard to separate the fact from the fiction in these legends about him, but with tales this eye-popping, who would want to?

it's nice to know that if a whoopie cushion could have existed that means they probably had normal cushions and didn't have to sit on hard marble benches all the time. else a whoopie cushion would stand out to any about to sit. though i guess if the emperor put it there i'd have to pretend not to notice it.

Rome could never have a coup and just oust an emperor and replace them without bloodshed lol We don't like this guy, let's brutally execute him, his family and his supporters lmao Rome was hard core.

Hey, Weird History, I don't mind lending you my ear, but when should I expect to get it back? Sometime soon, I hope. I don't want to have to go searching for a new one that matches the one I still have.

As for emperors, Theodosius II was worst. As for this guy, waterboarding already existed. The US army didn't discover it until they put down the Philippine independence war in 1900.

Guards, arrest yourselves! And then, execute each other! Yeah, it's a wonder that he lasted even four years! What a guy! This must be where Hollywood gets its cues!

When people act like Roman and Greek history is fully hetero as part of their propaganda it's like. how hard do you have to NOT look?
reply

Wild tyrants do, and they don't regret ittt!
Omg, he even looks like someone who would prank you in modern times. Very punchable face.

He's also storied to have been the first trans emperor and offered physicians top rewards if they could perform the surgeries.

If I click on a Weird History video and I hear THAT guy's voice narrating, I instantly Like the video. No matter what.

If I lived back then, I wouldn't have partied with him because he sounds like he was a real douche bag figuratively speaking.

Idk that flower party sounded pretty wack. The party with harmless lions and leopards tho? I'll take an invite to that one
reply

I wonder, what was his sense of humor like? Did he mind being the butt of jokes or would that have been a bridge too far?
reply

Come to think of it this would make a great show. it's better than Game of Thrones and everyone dies in the end lol

I have seen Emperor Varius mentioned on Time Team; had never heard these stories about him or knew this other name.

i am confused. why did you keep censoring sacrifice sometimes and not others? also. why did you do it at all.

Saying donkey weapon when talking about a large penis is now my favorite phrase. I am ABSOLUTELY deaaaaaaaad.
reply

As a historian, some of these name pronunciations got me cringing lol but you got most of them right!
reply

To be fair if I was the emperor I would do the same thing and human sacrifice was against the roman law
reply

An emperor is not a royal; they are an imperial. If you are going to nounify adjectives, do it correctly.
