The concept of prisons as we know them today is relatively modern. In antiquity, jails served less as places of penitence and more as a purgatory before the final judgment of guilt, which was often punished either by enslavement or execution. Before the mega jails and super-maxes of today, historical prisons took on many forms, from isolated islands to underground dungeons. Excluding any prison that is currently open and also the horrifically depressing sub-genre of concentration camps, this list reveals some of the scariest prisons in history. The: Fun fact: The Mamertine prison makes an appearance in the infamous 1979 film Caligula. When the mad Emperor, who was walking down the street as a simple citizen in great depression over the death of his sister/lover Drusilla, is arrested for causing a riot in the street, he ends up in the notorious prison, where he befriends a mute giant through magic tricks

Peter's imprisonment was brilliantly and terrifyingly portrayed in Anthony Burgess's novel The Kingdom of the Wicked. In that book, an elderly Peter decides to turn himself in to the authorities, since he cannot bear the fact that an old man like him is still alive while thousands of young Christians are being executed by Nero. The next time we see Peter, he is already dead and crucified upside down in the stadium, while, around him, children dressed as sheep are slaughtered by dogs in front of a horrified audience and the laughter of Nero and Tigellinus.

Robben Island. received little food -- garbage.
During its time as a prison there was a prison dance twice a year and I went once. It was an ordinary prision with decent conditions. I also worked with a guy whose wife was one of two of Mandella's secretaries on the prison at that time. Yes, you heard tha tright -- he had secretaries as they were grooming him for his role.
A distant relative died on that island from leprosy in the late 1800s.

Cloaca is the term used to refer to the bird's orifice used for #1 #2 and egg laying, so in layman's terms a chicken's A hole!
Thus Cloaca Maxima loosely translates to The biggest A hole!
Given the fact that it evacuated in to the sewers, it's safe to say that those prisoners were treated like #17!

Incredible that Australia was skipped from this list. The intention was to create a convict colony, which essentially happened for the first few years after settlement. There are many famous prisons that have a terrible past. It s surprising that none of this was mentioned.

Romans: You will be executed for being a Christian. However, since you have Roman citizenship, we will not crucify you, but simply behead you.
Saint Paul: Sh t. I had the illusion of dying face down like Peter. Lucky bastard.

Man, this is something. Reminds me of The Big House on prisons and Beyond Scared Straight. Heard and read of some prisons mentioned here whether through Eskify and Matthew Santoro.

I feel like Andersonville could've been on this list. I know it was a wartime prison, but since you had the prison ship from the Revolutionary War, it could be included

I don't get why the Navy Hymn was playing in the background, during the description of a medieval prison that held St. Paul and St. Peter.
