Why would you undergo neck elongation? This procedure, which works to stretch out the neck, causes pain and takes a lot of dedication. It's natural to wonder why anyone would go through the process. But look closer, and you'll realize that how neck elongation is perceived varies widely from person to person. Some cultures have a rich history of neck elongation practices. In many cases, the reasons why people elongate their necks are related to tradition.

I think this is deeply misogynist as a tradition. These beauty practices make healthy women all but disabled and stop them from becoming strong or even running away. I hope it gets abolished, you can still wear stuff around the neck when going out if you like but stop with this voluntary crippling.

There are some cultural practices that should die out and this is one them, like foot binding and female circumcision.
If a consenting adult chooses to undergo the elongation process, that's their decision but it is not acceptable to deform the bodies of children in this way!

i think yall neglect the fact that the reason people cringe at neck elongation isnt because it's a body mod, it's because our necks are a very sensitive part of the body, the idea of doing something to your neck that could hurt it is scary, not that it's weird or ugly

You know, this is interesting, but at the same time, it's alarming. I mean, the foot binding ritual and this are 'normal' in these cultures, but why does it have to be forced on young girls? The damage this does to the inside of the human body is very much avoidable.

I don't wear jewelry, not even earrings anymore. Can't stand tattoos or multiple/weird piercings. I wear V-neck shirts only because I feel like someone is choking me if I don't. So, no way in hell I'm putting rings around my neck. Stoopid is as stoopid does.

I read about this practice several years ago in a women's magazine but the article only mentioned Africa. It did say that it's damaging to the spinal cord since the rings push the body parts downward.
Also it looked like the women were getting strangled.

I remember seeing an advertisement in comic books for a book called Tall Up. The book offered exercises to make you taller by elongating your neck (without the rings. Supposedly, this makes you taller. In reality, it just pushes your clavicle down.

The voiceover on the giraffe lady's interview/statement twigged the same part of my brain that goes NOPE with uncanny valley things. Which, seems apt. It was also pretty hilarious since the narrator doesn't hide his annoyance with her at all.

As someone who takes off their underwire bra the minute I get home and someone who can't wear turtlenecks because they make me feel like I'm choking, the neck rings sound unbearable. Then again, I have 13 piercings and a couple of tattoos.

First, you had the caked on white makeup. The long earlobes. The big lower lips. Long Alien looking skulls and long necks Humans have the tendency to do weird stuff if they think it's beautiful or trendy. We are a very funny species.

I seen this as a kid my neighbor's wife had those rings around her neck at the time I didn't know it was neck elongation, I just thought she liked alot of necklaces, and at the time Mr T was popular, I don't know I'm old
reply

Isn t neck elongation along the same as binding the skull?
It s my understanding that royalty had those features- a long neck & elongated skull.
They may have been an ancient alien in ancient cultures,
perhaps.

When you think about it, it's not THAT strange. Here in the U. S woman get the
diaper butt a. k. a the Brazilian butt lift to attract a mate.
I bet Asian cultures find Western culture strange.
WEIRD history

I knew about the practice, but with this being front and center, I started thinking how this could be done, seeing how you can t add vertebrae, initially wonder if they stretched the cartilage, but you managed to clarify.
reply

Can you do one about the freaks with giant holes in their ear lobes too?
Usually heavily tattooed people with piercings etc. I think people forget they're gonna be old one day and look a right state
