On Oct. 13, 1972, a plane carrying 45 passengers, including the Old Christians Uruguayan rugby team, crashed in the Andes between Chile and Argentina. The Uruguayan Air Force flight 571 survivors believed they would be rescued within days. They could not have predicted how long their ordeal would last or that they would become famous as the Andes mountains cannibals. Of the 27 passengers who survived the impact, only 16 returned home alive when they were finally rescued over two months after the crash. In order to survive on an Andes mountainside, the rugby team crash survivors were forced to consume the flesh of fellow passengers who passed away. Their plight has been referred to as the miracle of the Andes.

The actual mistake the pilot made is known as controlled flight into terrain, which means, the pilots thought they were maneuvering the aircraft into a controlled descent, in this case, into the Santiago airport, but in reality, were totally unaware of their surroundings and presumed location. After leaving Mendoza, the plane went south towards the town of Planchon, to take the westward route through the mountain pass of the same name, to the town of Curico on the other side of the Andes, and from there, they would have turned north towards Santiago, their final destination. The crossing of the Andes through the Planchon Pass, is usually accomplished in 11 minutes.
But since there was turbulence during their flight through the pass, the counter-current winds would have made the crossing longer. The error was that the pilots did not take into account these counter-current winds, and, since the visibility of the terrain below was zero due to the mountains being completely covered in clouds, they did not account for the extra time they would have required to calculate to cross the mountain range, and thus, relying only on the usual time it would take to cross the Andes under normal conditions.
After 11 minutes of flying through the pass, they thought they had reached Curico, and proceeded to turn north and start descending into Santiago. But, unfortunately, they had not reached Curico, and turned north and started descending in the middle of the Andes. By the time they crossed the cloud cover, and realized they were not in Curico, they tried to regain altitude to avoid a collision with the mountains. That's why they crashed on the edge of the mountain.
Furthermore, the accident would have been more tragic than it was, if it wasn't because the plane hit the edge of the mountain, and not crash head on.

The movie focused too much on the drama of the situation.
Dude, it was about a group of people who survived a plane crash into the side of a mountain, a major avalanche, freezing temperatures, and resorted to cannibalism to avoid starving to death. And eventually, after all that, they had to save themselves because the search efforts were called off.
I think, given all that, it's understandable to focus on the drama of their situation.

I remember when this happened. I was just a kid at the time, & for several days we'd have classroom discussions about it, discussing the various moral aspects & ethical questions raised & everything. And of course the inevitable question came up: If you were in that position, would _you_ be able to do that To this day (and I'm 60) I still don't know if I could. (Apart from everything else, I've got a pretty queasy stomach anyway)

The movie stuck with me for days. Very well done. It's scary to think what these people went through to survive. I'd have probably given up.

Few groups could have survived this ordeal. These men were healthy, young, athletic specimens. Apparently they were also of strong character.

I don't know if I could eat human flesh. I can barely eat animals. Bad gut. But I wouldn't mind if people ate my dead body to survive.

Cover the Lemp Family in St. Louis. They predate and has a bush and most of the family committed suicide with the same gun in the same house.
