I’d like to know how city island became essentially a quiet neighborhood while other valuable properties went to a city jail and quarantined or nothing at all. Staten Island is obviously a bit larger but why use some islands for ppl and landmarks yet not others Remember it would have been around the same time that Typhoid Mary spread disease as the Statue of Liberty was dedicated and Ellis island was receiving immigrants so why were those islands more useful
Actually it’s more likely immigrants were sent there bc they were undesirable at least until approved. We value it now as a piece of heritage. And yet, so many ppl are anti immigrant now

There’s two artificial islands of of Staten Island: Hoffman and Swinburne, they were used for quarantining sick migrants from Ellis Island. One island was for people expected to recover. The other well it had a crematorium. During WW2 they were used for training and to hold anti-submarine nets. Despite plans to make them parks, or even homeless shelters, both have been left to return to nature as part of the Gateway National Park system. Many harbor birds and even seals use the islands. If you are going over the bridge you can see them to the south, and they are visible from South Beach as well.

Y’see those islands were used as isolation wards back when negative pressure rooms in hospitals were not invented. They were one way trips because the currents were really strong in those areas; leading to ghost stories. Typhoid Mary wasn’t as naive as one thought, failing to wash her hands which is why she was banished there. The fuel to go to and from is the reason why no one can live there. And it’s considerably smaller and less stable than Rosevelt Island,

BTW, guess how 'Typhoid' Mary Mallon spread that disease By NOT washing her hands after going to the bathroom THEN putting those nasty hands into the raw ingredients that she'd then cook and serve to her employers! Yep, she wound up spending 23 years stuck on that hospital island ALL because she refused to either quit food preparation. .or bother to wash her hands after going to the bathroom! UGH!

If I could hear Tom talk about my old neighborhood on Roosevelt Island, nyc.
Btw, Mary 'Typhoid' Mallon was cremated, her ashes are buried about a mile away from me right now, in the Irish section of the Bronx.
Anthony Bourdain wrote a short book about her.
Anyway, Roosevelt Island has Boss Tweed and Nellie Bly.

Rikers is not federal nor is it a prison, it’s a jail. Your not supposed to do long stints there it’s really there to hold you til your court date, and if convicted you get sent to prison upstate. There is so much violence there dudes end up getting more time added on and stay in Rikers longer than they should.

Manhattan is one of the strangest pieces of land in the world. It's like people in the 1700s said, let's take this teeny little island over here and have a contest to see how many people and how much stuff we can possibly cram into it until we can't fit any more.
reply

I see there's also a South Brotherly Island which is smaller and looks too small for development. I did the Manhattan Island circle boat tour in 2003 and i don't remember if North Brotherly was mentioned, probably I just dont remember now.

Clarification on South Brother Island: The island was mostly uninhabited after Ruppert's house burned down.
In 1975 the city sold the island to Hamptons Scow, a sand and gravel company, for $10.

My thought is I’m a born and raised NYer. But I haven’t lived there for 20yrs.
One day I want to live off the grid. Nothing beats your childhood home. I can chill with those too

This island being abandoned doesn’t make logical sense, so I have to assume there is more to the story. Bird sanctuary Too expensive to run but also too valuable to own What

If anyone wants to learn more about the General Slocum diasater there is a really interesting nonfiction book about it, Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the General Slocum.
reply

So you mean New York could have just housed their many homeless there for less than the amount that they've been spending the house them
