What If We Drained the Oceans?

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
What if we found the way to drain all the Earth's oceans through some mysterious portal at the bottom of the Mariana Trench? How long would it take? Years? Centuries? Millennia? Would there be any life left on Earth when the pumping was over? What if it happened overnight? Oceanic water makes up 70% of the Earth-s surface. If we opened a portal about the size of a basketball court, it would take us hundreds of thousands of years to pump out the oceans. They hold over a billion cubic km (321 million cubic miles) of water. But what if we had a pump powerful enough to drain all the oceans in a minute? What would happen then?

This happened to Earth in the world of Warhammer 40, 000. The circumstances of 'how' are unclear, but the entire planet DID desertify and breathable air exists only due to massive, barely understood atmospheric regulators. What water remains is carefully hoarded and much needs to be shipped in from off-planet.

Hundreds of thousands? I doubt it, with the incredible weight and force of the oceans, the water would go through the hole at insane speed. In my opinion it would only take a decade or 2, maybe less. Just my 2 cents
reply

In other words it basically becomes mars.
No life can truly live without water no matter how long they xan lice without it. E. g. the Kangaroo Rat is said to live without it for 10 years

reply

The water would just come back, due to them icebergs and stuff, remember they can melt, and places can freeze, then melt. Depending on earth's position or wherever the coldest places be.
reply

Only the evil will wish this. think about that too have childrens not too enjoy the waters. Satan will want this too destroy God creations. But it will never happen. God want allow it.
reply

Show me another planet that has this much water. And can sustain life. You can't because it doesn't exist. Planet Earth itself prooves the existence of God. No negative comments please.
reply

With all of this being so perfectly put together so life can exist we can see a master planner? So many infallible proofs yet man can-t believe in God but rather a big accident-
reply

Don't worry guys. Our water that doesn't go anywhere. There might be lack of pure water but water is still remain becuz water will wash our history at the end of our race.
reply

I really hate the ocean. I like really, REALLY hate the ocean. I watched this video and saw all the negative results from losing them, and I'm okay with that. Oh well.
reply

Remember, the land we live on is considered a mountain if we drained the water.
And the land that was underwater is normal land without water.

reply

Maybe all the other planets had life on them and some douche with a massive hang over drank all the water XD. now they're just giant nothing planets: (

My question was answered by the thumbnail itself, the video was not necessary -. Infact the video was irrelevant for me sry -
reply

Then the missing Submarine OceanGate could be found safe at the dry bottom of the Earth no more ocean water to worry about -
reply

So what about the changes in the atmosphere in the bottom of the oceans? Will the pressure still be the same or what?
reply

But you said draining the ocean and not have it disappear in a snap that everything would fall on to the surface.
reply

I was wondering what would happen if we found a way to get water to the deserts if our planet would cool down?
reply

What utter tosh. The boats would drop with the water loss.
Also 70% of our oxygen comes from the oceans.

reply

And this is why there are no aliens. just accept that we are special even with how big the universe is.
